Hi guys i just started to work on a game so i would like to know is it better to build a city in 3d app(blender in my case) then export it in smaller chunks and then in unity just add stuff like lamps, tress etc…If so could any tell me with what should i first start?I was thinking with streets.
1.) What kind of city?
2.) Yes you start with streets.
3.) I would rather recommend Sketchup for building cities if you plan to add details in Unity.
4.) What is your poly/LOD budget?
5.) Why not just procedurally generate the non-accessible areas and then focus only on the playable ones.
6.) Don’t forget to make things like social maps, depth maps, park maps etc.
7.) What’s the style/timeline?
1.) What kind of city?Medium Sized.
2.) Yes you start with streets.Ok
3.) I would rather recommend Sketchup for building cities if you plan to add details in Unity.Details are not added in unity only stuff like streetlights.
4.) What is your poly/LOD budget?Dont really know right now.
5.) Why not just procedurally generate the non-accessible areas and then focus only on the playable ones.Sandbox type of game.
6.) Don’t forget to make things like social maps, depth maps, park maps etc. I know that.
7.) What’s the style/timeline?Set in 50s.
1.1950s looking city.
4.No its not a joke im not using any city engines all the modeling is done by me most of the buildings will have under 500verts.
5.If you didnt know games like driver, gta etc are sandbox games.
7.Yes
Well i personally would rather construct the buildings i wanted in this city in my 3d modelling application like Maya or Blender and just place them all and design the layout within Unity unless it was really large in scale then i would use some MEL script or something to create a layout and just tweak it from that but i know not everyone has Maya and or knows MEL script although if you do own Maya there are a ton of free scripts that do what i have mentioned above that you can get your hands on.
You would have more control over how the city will look if you design and place all of the models yourself within Unity although it can be very time consuming if you plan on making a huge city…
I cannot give any feedback on the above mentioned things like CityEngine as i have never heard of it before
