I’ve worked at game companies which would give these drinks to employees , when it gets to crazy over time, do you guys think Energy drinks are ever needed ?
Nope, I’ve played some mmorpgs for ages at a time and never needed an energy drink… coffee!!! (is all you need)
I have one coffee a day at about 10am and that’s it
Any company that does crazy overtime is a company that is not well managed in my opinion. Shorter work days with higher quality of work is much more important then hours. Energy drinks are also filled with sugar… and you should try to not eat too much sugar.
Ya know, with this and the “nutrition post”, I’m getting the sense that 90% of Unity users are Mormon. Seriously, when did everyone become such weak, health nut, Richard Simmons clones?
I personally don’t like energy drinks, but I drink a LOT of coffee. And I also think that a company that hands out energy drinks to their employees is being very cool. They understand that you’re working late and they want to keep you happy (and awake).
And overtime happens; especially in the game industry (due to tight budgets, strict deadlines and unexpected delays). Most people deal with it because they love their work and want to see the game finished as much as anyone else. If you can’t accept that, go get a factory job that let’s you go home when the whistle blows.
If you work at a factory, you really need an energy drink!

Work smarter, not harder.
Oh gee, why didn’t they think of that. You should go educate some of those dev companies. Clearly they’re in need of your insight.
I’d rather compete.
To be far game companies waste tons of money keeping people in chairs when their half awake .
Plus when you push your employees to work too many hours it can generate a sense of apathy towards the overall project .
At my last job the manager tired to get me to give "110% " my last week , after working 15 hour days and ridding the bus at 3am( in America this isn’t cool) I could care less .
I agree with stramit that any company that depends on overtime, like massive 7 day straight crap isn’t managed right .
I still drink energy drinks since i’m at the point where i can’t wake up with out em .
Basically they will burn you out they dont care because they can get a new guy that will be happy to take your place. Its abit sad really
No. Those drinks are filled mostly with crap anyway. Your work routine should be something that fits naturally into your lifestyle.
8-9 hour days should be the maximum, unless of course you’ve got an important deadline or you need to roll an emergency patch for some game breaking issue.
I do not drink that. nor coffee.
Natural juice is all I need ![]()
I avoid them and still do 16 hour work days without burning out every few weeks. The trick is to moderate yourself, and get some good sleep and rest when you can. And eat well because that is better than burning your body out and filling it with junk from energy drinks. Energy drinks lead to less productivity because after they’ve worn off you crash and do less. You end up doing less overall.
The amount of diet energy drinks/highly caffeinated diet soda that I need to consume to remain awake in general, is usually enough to make a room full of guys start bouncing off the walls like coke addicts coming out the bathroom at a company Christmas party…
…if I drink more than a few cups of hot coffee though, it will knock me out.
Amen to that… I tried five hour energy once, and I spent 4.5 of those hours on the crapper…never again
LOL
I ALWAYS do this… even in my workflow, I find smarter ways to do better…
Seriously…and they lured me in with the grape flavour… though I was wide awake too…
I’m addicted to coffee!
Work smarter is good but often, hard work is the only avenue available. And energy drinks are always bad.
