i don’t know. energy drinks gives me a boost when i am bored and exhausted. but i don’t use it as much.
Energy drinks gives me a short boost and after i crash so for me they are not an option for work. A cup of coffee works better i think, plus the price of these drinks are crazy!
Energy drinks can have a serious negative affect on your health. I used to drink a lot of them, and no more, ended up with some (thankfully temporary) mental health issues because of the affects of the stimulants. Not to mention they can eat up your stomach really bad, a friend of mine ended up with significant amount of ulcers in his stomach and needed to stop drinking them and go on medication and almost died as a result.
It doesn’t take extreme consumption to get to these points either - however extreme consumption causes your heart to race, and can affectively put you in an early grave or have you taking heart medication most often prescribed to the elderly.
Water is my friend now, and not going up and down from caffeine/sugar consumption helps me keep a laser focus which I could not imagine having before.
I think that aspartame is really bad for you, you should certainly check up on that ![]()
Try telling that when your boss tells you to work a 15 hour shift . Most human beings can’t stay awake and alert that long- plus you have to factor in the commute to and from work .
Perhaps you should try telling your boss to shove it up his or her anus ![]()
It’s a neurotoxin. Then again, the alternative gives you cancer. Another alternative causes gastric/digestive issues. Then there’s the issue of weight gain in some people leading to issues such as heart disease and stroke.
Is it in my contract to work 15 hours? If so, that’s on me. If not, don’t have to tell the boss anything…
Most humans can’t stay awake for 15 hours? Are we a species of narcoleptics?
He added in the commute, etc. You figure an hour each way, throw in an hour for lunch, the time that you spend getting ready in the morning, and the time before you get to sleep that night… you’re looking at around 4 hours sleep or so. It’s not just about being awake, it’s about being awake and productive during that time… I’ve stayed up over three days at times here and there, God knows what language I’m speaking heading into that fourth day before I pass out…lol.
Same here. I’ve seen my share of hallucinations moving into the third day without sleep.
Fun fact! No one has yet figured out why humans require sleep. There’s actually no biological reason for it ![]()
It’s kind of scary - cause yeah, you start having the audio and visual hallucinations. You start getting paranoid. It’s creepy. It’s your own eyelids as you’re blinking, but no - no - there’s somebody there. Yeah, I tend not to recommend it.
As for why we require sleep - it is an interesting thing there, we know we need it; but we’re not really sure why. There’s a lot of misconceptions about what happens during sleep. They’ve been able to prove how those are misconceptions, but they still do not know why we need it. Trippy for sure.
There is one and I recall that it was proofen as a fact actually.
Humans or better our brain requires sleep to process the input of the day, to build the relationships and to get ‘over it’.
If you get little to no sleep for a long time you will start to feel the consequence with less and less capability to store new informations and what at times can be much worse than that (especially if you are not a single), with a proofen growth of paranoia that most people share that sleep too little, where the brain is not being able to correctly asses situations and detect interpret known patterns anymore, starting to see ‘ghosts’ where there aren’t any kinda.
As for staying awake 15h: I don’t know how to stay awake that little. I need to ‘force my head to sleep’ at less than 17-19h of being awake
And I personally like energy drinks / coffee. But I don’t need them. They are just a way to keep the productivity up during high crunch with 16h of full speed working a day (caffeine on its own is not capable of that. Requires a constant 180bpm+ from my headphones and hopping around with the feets and legs on my chair to keep the body going and pushing beyond the boundaries)
I’d have to look into that. It’s also a proven fact that your senses pull in almost 90% more information than your brain processes. So your brain is “getting over” things all day long. (Kinda makes you wonder what that 90% that’s being thrown out is.)
Fun fact #2: Did you know that the human brain is designed to run on a 25 hour day? The extra hour is put in there so that the brain is capable of waking up at a moment’s notice (in case of danger).
And yes, I was designing a game about this stuff, which is why my head is filled with tons of strange facts about random crap ![]()
P.S. I’m on hour 23 of being awake, so my posts may start making less and less sense.
The problem is our brain was designed for 25h days as we used to have them.
The multitasking world we are living in strains the head more than the days that used to be the norm back then and we normally hit the limits much much earlier without some ways to trick our head to exceed its limits, or whats more commonly, through sheer will, training and a good dose of ‘boosters’ (be it caffeine, medication against hyper activity, other stimuli - like a engaging and 100% focus requiring game or discussion that forces the brain back into wake state) to get through normal days at its real potential and at least I can’t do that for more than a few days. Beyond that my head is numb for multiple days until it has regenerated again and my motivation is absolutely dead to do more than ‘give my head a break and entertain myself’
That being said, the step 0 of actually getting through days meaningfully is hydration. If you try to pull of 24h days and more, in a productive state, with less than 6 - 8l of Water, skip it, you ain’t gonna do it without paying seriously for it, not for more than 1 or 2 days a week
i don’t like energy drinks, coffee, or anything else like it (i gave up soda about 8 months ago, yay me!), I only drink water (about 95oz of water a day, not including what i drink when working out). Your brain needs to be fed nutrients to work at its optimum level. what also helps is that i make sure i get to bed by before midnight (my goal is to sleep by 10pm, but i keep messing that up) With these lil changes, i never feel tired, and i can focus much easier.
i don’t make AAA or console games anymore, therefore crunch is a thing of the past. This schedule was hard when i was in the line of work, but at my current company its easy, and being able to work out everyday really helps.
An hour of exercise, will do more for you than drinking that energy drink, especially when drinking those energy drinks is decreasing returns, where as that hour of exercise - along with staying well hydrated, could easily keep you going on a 15 hour day, 20 hour day, or even 48 hour day. Energy drinks have a cycle of sugar crash, and stimulant overload, that leaves you shakey and un-focused. Where as exercise tends to focus your mind and body.
I’m a health-nut and I’m Mormon…
my lifestyle is bad and I should feel bad? ![]()
Psh, only for newbs. For people like me, who live off of coffee, you eventually level out to a middle ground of never being tired, but never being hyped up. Just gotta make it through the turbulence of system shock ![]()
Of course alot of this boils down to you quality of life at work . Like I was hourly so I did make decent money , but my salary co-workers( design guys, non manager salary coders get Overtime in my home state ) would have to work extra days for NO extra pay . The alternative to working extra days would be a prompt pink slip .
You also need to factor in though, that those salaried guys were probably banking a lot more money than you to begin with and, even if they missed work (sick days, vacation, etc) they still got paid.
I realize I’m probably in the minority, but I’ve always preferred reliability of salaried positions.
