Game Development (499633)

Hi my name is Josh i am am doing a documentry video on the gameing industry.
And i was wondering for evidence if people could post there ideas on how they became a game developer and also have some opionions on how i started.

How i started.
I starting using Unity when 14 and i have been using Unity for 3 years.
I learn by testing and playing around with stuff in the engine. Also by learning from my mistakes.
I will be doing this for a cerrer as it has been a dream to build games for a living.
You/I can learn more from making games that i don’t normally play.
To be a game designer you have to be a hard worker and open minded/creative.

Question i’d love for you to answer:
When did you start game development?
How do you learn new things?
Do you want to be a full time game developer?
Do you learn more to do with game development by making games that you don’t normally play?(First Person Shooter)
Do you agree that you have to be creative and a hard worker to successed in the gaming industry?
If you love to share more infomation about how you became a game developer then please share

Thank you for your help

Josh AKA terraincreator.

Hey there, seems like you’ve got about the same roadmap as me

I think I started at about the same age as you did, at ~14 years, over 2 years from now

I started with some tutorials on the internet, basic syntax and such. Then I moved to the BurgzergArcade tutorial series, focussed on setting up a “system” for your game (inventory, items, health and things like that) Nowadays I just learn by creating my own game. Overcoming problems that I come across, googling about it and looking at other people’s code.

I would like to, I think  We’ll see where we’ll end up with.

Not completely sure what you mean by this, but I’m just trying to make the game I would like to play. Mostly a mix of some of my favourite games. For example, I like the fact you can sculpt your world the way you want in Minecraft, love the combat system in Mount Blade and the crafting of Wurm-Online (though I’d like it faster and more interactive than that)

I think yes, alot of new guys here think creativity is everything you need. They’re like the “idea guy”. Well, you have to work hard on something to show in order to get people who want to join in. Though if you’re not creative, you’ll probably end up with a copy of whatever-you-name-it game

I wouldn’t call myself a “real” game developer. This is just a hobby. But I think you need alot of patience, determination and open-minded to be succesfull as a game developer.

Thanks, this help me out

Very interesting answers thanks again…

How do you learn new things?
when trying to replicate other ideas, with vids, tutorials and documentation on internet

Do you want to be a full time game developer?
YES! dream since child, so became IT for it

Do you learn more to do with game development by making games that you don’t normally play?(First Person Shooter)
yes, it gives you another focus

Do you agree that you have to be creative and a hard worker to successed in the gaming industry?
yes, creativity(technical creativity) lets you find ways to do what you want with the tools you have, or make your own to make it real, for me it is making an idea to became true, hard working is also a must

Well, i had the programming skills since i was an IT consultant, and i saw an opening for GameDeveloper in a starting company so they wanted some one who knew to program, and they will give the time to learn by yourself, so i applied, then i started to learn about unity, made some games and aps and then wanted to go to bigger companies overseas so i changed to a work where i could get some money to have abackup plan when i get hired overseas, now i play a little with unity and i am waiting to get hired.

Thanks

When did you start game development?

I started actually coding and making games at the age of 12, when I taught myself my first steps in programming. I found unity 3 years later, and have been using it ever since.

How do you learn new things?

I learn new things by researching then applying. If I want to know how something works, I’ll look it up, and then try and use what I have learnt.

Do you want to be a full time game developer?

Potentially. It’d be nice, although the market is getting very crowded.

Do you learn more to do with game development by making games that you don’t normally play?(First Person Shooter)

When I start a project, I always look around the genre and play what’s out there. So in a sense, I do learn a lot more when making something I wouldn’t normally play, because I’m playing titles that I wouldn’t normally play.

Do you agree that you have to be creative and a hard worker to successed in the gaming industry?

Very much so. All aspects of game development are very demanding, from the programming, through the art, even down to writing the script and storyline. All of it takes creativity to adapt and apply skills in each area, and each area requires a lot of hard work.

I wanted to from a very young age- seeing my uncle programming a pac-man clone inspired me, and still does. For years after that, and again, up till now, I kept multiple sketchbooks and notepads filled with ideas ranging from feasible to completely, bewilderingly impossible. Getting my ideas down, and being able to flesh out a project drove that desire to make it live even more. It’s a way that I can make my creations come to life, and let other people interact with them. That’s why I was inspired to do what I do.

Hope this helps.
