Game Development Music Playlists - Music for Developing

I have a back living room ‘office’ which is usually occupied by at least one other person when I’m working.

In the evening when I gamedev - to reduce distraction and stay focused I like to listen to game music/audio tracks with headphones.

Vocal songs tend to be just as distracting as a TV, or conversation so I usually stick to non-vocal tracks that have a nice beat.

Here are some of the playlists I listen to.
Pac-Man Championship 2
Deadmau5
Safrosoft RoX
Chill Gaming
Zircon
Overclocked Remix meh’
F-777
Good music playlist
Monstercat playlist
Web development/gaming
Super Hexagon Soundtrack
Boson X OST

I’ve been getting a little distracted by the redundancy of the playlists I usually listen to so I thought I’d ask around to see if anyone else listens to non-vocal game related music playlists.

Anyone have some suggestions for similar/like development music playlists?
Please share! :sunglasses:

I actually typically listen to tracks with vocals, though I typically pick things I’m familiar enough with that I won’t really “need” to listen to the words.

As far as pure instrumentals go, the only thing I listen to is the Mass effect 3 soundtrack. That one can actually be more distracting for me though, because of the scenes and memories I associate with the tracks…you might try it if you want, but it’s pretty “eventful.”

I’m either listening to classical violin music (my favorite type of music) yeah I know weird for a 28 year old haha.
But if I’m not listening to that, I’m listening to music that matches the type of game I’m making (E.G. - Space music for space game).

If not listening to music, I’m listening to motivational videos not for any specific reasoning, nor because I need to listen to them, I just love to hear them, I feel good hearing how others have gotten successful, it reminds me society isn’t doomed because there’s still people out there who have a vision and go for it, you look at the news you see nothing but doom and gloom, at least motivational videos you can see and hear people being the best they can be.

I’m quite a fan of the 60s pop music, and songs from various female musicians from the 60s to the late 90s, so these are what I usually listen to when I work.

When I don’t listen to music, I just play some random documentary I find on YouTube, in a (vain) hope that it might help me improving my English skills :stuck_out_tongue:

Cool! Thanks for that suggestion.
I’ve never owned an xbox so I thought I might look up some games that I have never played before. Fable seems to have some pretty good tracks.

Naw - not weird warhead, I also enjoy woodwind instrumentals - gives me a feeling of the fairy folk, lore that old England used to have. Reminds me of Tolken (the books) before it was popularized by the movies.
I also tend to listen to music that matches the type of content I’m creating, however I do mostly animation contract work and I really need a good beat, even if I’m working on a emotional type animation. It just keeps me in the groove - and progressing forward.

Although this would probably be completely distracting to me - I’m interested in your choices. Are you talking about Madonna, Cindy Lauper, and the like? I don’t know many 60-70s female pop singers. I was subjugated to country until the mid 80s, so Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette, and that era is memorable to me - even if I didn’t really like it back then. Parents music is so OLD! LOL and now my son says that to me when I fire up some Twisted Sister or Queen!

I’ve made a long and horrific concoction of 150 songs on a Spotify playlist. Everything from ABBA to Queen (best band ever. Period.) to Katy Perry to Ariana Grande to Rammstein (heavy German metal), Black Sabbath to keep me awake, Russian pop, Galantis, Deadmau5, music tracks from games (Mass Effect 3 music by Clint Mansell, Fallout 4 opening track), and the one and only Gangnam style. Don’t judge me.

@N1warhead_1 , it’s not weird at all. I’m in high school yet I play classical piano every day for hours. Music taste has nothing to do with age, people of all ages can love all genres. I’m a huge Rachmaninoff fan, so perhaps you’ll like this violin music, or this trio.

Glad to see that we share some of our favorite musicians  I actually love all those artists you mentioned(especially Queen!), except for Patsy Cline and Tammy Wynette whom I haven’t heard before since I can’t say myself to be a big fan of country music.

As to the 60s pop music, I think it’s more of the atmosphere, or even spirit of the time that I really love. I cannot help but thinking that the musicians back then had much more originality and more sincere attitude towards the art they profess than many of those from the 2000s onwards. (I know I’ll probably be burned at the stake for saying this, but still…)

If one was to choose an arbitrary year from 1960 to 1969, and looks at the Billboard top list of that time, I bet he or she will certainly find at least couple of familiar songs, which means they persisted through the time and are still being loved by many people today. However, I’m not quite sure if how many of the songs that were released after the year 2000 will still be listened to half a century later.

Urg… sorry if I sounded like I was forcing my own personal musical taste to anyone. Anyway, among the musicians you mentioned, I like Cyndi Lauper the most. At first, I thought her to be a copycat of Madonna, but later I found that she had quite a talent both in songwriting as well as in singing - you gotta give some credit to anyone who can still write and perform such a song when she reaches her 40s :

Aside from that, I love wide range of both pop and rock musicians from the 60s to the 90s. If I had to choose just one female artist from the period that I love the most, I probably have to say it’s Joni Mitchell, because of her striking originality and her status as an icon of the time:

Hope I’m not going to be banned or anything for posting so many videos that have nothing to do with games

Totally forgot about Rammstein from years ago!! Thanks - and that is kinda perfect since - I can’t understand one single word they sing, but it doesn’t matter really.

I listen to some artists.

Most of the time I listen to whatever Disney stuff the kids have on in the background.

Given the choice I tend to prefer working in relative silence. Or out in nature with birds in the background.

Occasionally I’ll listen to video game sound tracks. But most of the time any music tends to be distracting. I’ll find myself listening to music instead of paying attention to code.

If you’re into Rammstein you might like Heldmaschine:

If you’re into not understanding a word, then you might like the whole death metal genre:

Or maybe Turmion Kätilöt:

When I work on my normal architectural stuff and also game programming I mostly have CNN on the TV behind me.
I sometimes listen to music I like, but then I actually listen to it too much.

I sometimes listen to this game music site: Game Music Radio: Playing only the best gaming tunes 24 hours a day - RPGamers Network
There are songs with words, but not all, easy to ignore.

I tried this a few times: https://www.radiorivendell.com/

I tend to not listen to music while coding, but if I did I’d probably reach for Ozric Tentacles & Skeewiff (Mexican Flyer is probably my all time favourite game music) first.

Unfortunately as an animator - THIS is totally off limits for me - as it is TOO distracting. :frowning:

Oh cool! Thanks Martin.

Thanks for the rpggamers link - I think I listen to that on Pandora when I’m outside gardening!

Another series that typically has very, very good music is Sonic the Hedgehog. While they typically have a number of vocal tracks, just the music itself is very good.

examples:

Final Fantasy is another that tends to have interesting music as well.

Though these might be rather distracting, they’re so captivating…

^^^ if you listen to nothing else, listen to this…or it’s lyrical counterpart:

A lot of the songs have lyrics, but they’re to a made up language, they don’t mean anything.

I didn’t actually watch the video, I just picked one at random from the band, because their songs all mostly sound the same to me. Now that you commented on it I thought maybe I should watch it and see what’s up with it and… I nearly spit my drink over my keyboard laughing. You’ve picked the perfect response gif. Maybe I should add an NSFW tag
