Hello! I wanna to make a project, and I need to do next things:

  1. Controllable chapacter with animation. They should be able to walk, turn around, jump.
  2. World made of cubes, just like Minecraft.
  3. Function where you can place and break blocks, like in Minecraft.
Yes, my project would be inspired by minecraft. Cubic graphics, mechanics with breaking blocks and placing them, and other things.
Also I would like to add inventory (with slots) system and item system, like the same Minecraft. There would be pickaxes (to break blocks faster), blocks (to place them), and space blaster (to shoot lasers and kill enemies), and swords (to deal more damage to enemies).
And also enemies, they would deal damage to player, and they follow them if they are in their view radius.
If you break blocks or kill enemies, they will drop items.
Yes, that’s going to be my first project…

Hi.
You can look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vMTN5fiFwK8 maybe it would help. Also you can search “How to Make Minecraft in Unity?”.
Animation can be find there https://www.mixamo.com/..
Hope this helps..

Grab a character controller.

Grab a Minecraft-like game template / rendering asset.

You can get those on the store, and perhaps GitHub.

If you want to do this DIY as your first project, you have to start smaller. Tinier. Think: a single block. Then a block of blocks. Then copy that a hundred times and realize performance tanks because you can’t build a blocky Minecraft world out of actual Cubes, each with its own collider. That doesn’t scale to even just a 64x64x64 world as that would amount to 260,000 game objects!! You could maybe render a single Minecraft chunk (16x16x256 = 65k objects) that way.

You’ll need greedy meshing, streaming chunk updates (with save/load), collision based on coordinates and chunk/block lookup rather than colliders, and all those other heavy algorithmic things. Considering that, buying a Minecraft-like game template is really cheap. You can get right into content creation, though even that will be very demanding of you.

There’s even some free ones on github… the amount of setup and fiddling you have to do may vary widely, but in my experience, that doesn’t matter if it is Asset Store bought or github-found: it’s pretty much a roll of the dice.

Two steps to tutorials and / or example code:

  1. do them perfectly, to the letter (zero typos, including punctuation and capitalization)
  2. stop and understand each step to understand what is going on.

If you go past anything that you don’t understand, then you’re just mimicking what you saw without actually learning, essentially wasting your own time. It’s only two steps. Don’t skip either step.

Step #2 is particularly critical when learning.

If you are unwilling or unable to do Step #2, just ask someone else to do the whole game for you.

But on Java, world of Minecraft is very giant, and it’s not so laggy…

Correct. Minecraft has been out for 15+ years and there are thousands of existing articles on how that was accomplished, as well as dozens if not hundreds of example projects you can download.

If you are not going to bother download at least the first four free ones you can find on github and get them going (I did this), we’re certainly not going to tell you all the details in this tiny little text box!

Interesting fact, I going to make my game greater than Minecraft.
I will add some features that weren’t in Minecraft. For example, furniture, and guns!
Mojang didn’t add furniture because it ruins player’s creativity, and players should create furniture out of existing blocks (such furniture is shown in structures like villages and mansion).

Yes, but they also didn’t build it on Cubes alone. It uses 16x16x256 chunks (65k ‘cubes’) which get generated/saved/loaded individually. And for rendering they employ the same greedy meshing technique where only the visible surface areas of blocks are part of the mesh, rather than 65k times 6 sides - the savings are around 95% to 99%!!

That means the primitive “cubes” approach is somewhere between 20 to 100 times less efficient, not just slower but consuming more memory too.

Its world is already infinite …

It has built-in furniture blocks like bookshelves, armor stands and things like that. It also has at least the “bow” gun, but certainly no AK-47 (without mods).

As furniture I also mean chairs, tables, aquariums, lamps and other things. Probably there would be furniture sets, like terraria…

There is already a lot of mods for Java Minecraft that add all that already. If you want to build upon what Minecraft already has, then perhaps learning how to mod the game is more approachable.

I know, but…
I want to create game, not mod for game.
That swedish game really great, and probably the greatest, but I want to make my game greater…

Totally understand that. I tried modding for a bit but found it was less enjoyable than actual game dev.

Don’t mean to discourage but toppling the literal best selling game of all time is unlikely. Something more unique and novel is more likely to be a breakout success.

Not to say it’s impossible. Vintage Story is a successful Minecraft-like which serves a much more realistic and hardcore niche, which was made by a group of people who started out with Minecraft mods.

Notch was also a very experienced dev before he started on Minecraft. He had worked on and released multiple small games before starting on Minecraft.

It would be wiser to cut your teeth on smaller ideas first.

Again, not to discourage you, but want to help keep expectations in check.

  1. Yes, the idea is not so original. Maybe this won’t be the best game, but this maybe the best Minecraft clone, along with some EXCEPT copies on Google Play that free (and they exist), and the official clones from Mojang themself (story mode, dungeons, earth, legends, and future dungeons 2!). Probably I should hire some guys that will help me in the developement.
  2. Currently I working with just clicker.
