How to get feedback on early development gameplay without getting ripped off?

Hey all,

Yes, I have just posted a question about networking. No, it has nothing to do with this post (this is a completely different question).

I feel that I’ve got enough of a game that I’d like to get some feedback from other, more experienced developers, artists and players as I would like to continue improving what I have so far. Not to mention improving my knowledge of this craft and ‘what makes a great game’. However I don’t know how to go about this…

Can I just post a link on a forum somewhere and say ‘have at it’? Do I send a link to people I’ve spoken to on these forums privately? Is there a specific site/resource set up for this?

Furthermore, how do I get my pre-alpha builds out there without someone saying to themselves “Hmm, that’s a cool little game… let’s rip the idea off of them”?

I know that I may be getting ahead of myself, as one look and people would probably say ‘come back when you’ve actually got something’. And I know that I’m probably allowing my imagination run a little wild (I can’t imagine ANYONE would want to steal what I’ve got so far, lol), but felt that the question was still worth asking.

Are there any thoughts on how to go about this?

Many thanks in advance, as usual, for even just reading this. Would be great to hear from you all.

Mike.

Most devs are working on great ideas of their own. Ideas aren’t that big a deal in this industry, chances are yours isn’t worth stealing yet. Implementation is everything.

The game design forum is a pretty good place to share and ask for feedback.

Welcome to the game development market. If you’re making anything for mobile be prepared for it to be cloned quickly.

My advice would be to approach it in the same way as Thomas Was Alone. A rough prototype on a web portal. Having a prototype available to play years before the release of the commercial title didn’t prevent his success.

Hey all,

Many thanks for the replies. @Kiwasi , totally agree, my idea isn’t worth stealing… but was a question I thought worth asking. Will look into that design forum, thank you XD

@Ryiah , thank you. I’ll look into ‘Thomas was alone’ a little later today. Thank you also for those article links, some very valid points made in that Unity forum link. Thanks

Well that’s pretty much settled my concerns about the ‘idea stealing’ thing. Will check out the game design forum for feedback. Again, thanks you two!
