Kerbal Space Program - Out of Early Access

Hi,

I figure it’s now a good time to post something here, as Kerbal Space Program, our project for the last four and a half years, is now officially out as version 1.0!

KSP is a game about building spacecraft, launching them, and ultimately helping the Kerbals fulfill their ultimate goal of reaching space.

The game has 3 main modes: Sandbox, where you’re free to build and fly anything you’d like, and explore the solar system, or just buzz the space center facilities in a jet aircraft; Science, in which you start off with limited parts available, and must perform scientific experiments to earn Science and advance through the tech tree; and Career, where all game mechanics are active, and you must contend with managing an entire space program, from taking up contracts to earn Funds, managing your reputation, upgrading your Space Center facilities, taking up administrative Strategies to help you boost your chosen playing style, as well as everything else from the previous modes.

Construction is done in the Vehicle Assembly Building and Space Plane Hangar facilities. Building starts with selecting parts off the list, and attaching them in the building area to construct a spaceship (or well, hopefully a spaceship).

Once your mighty space-faring vessel is ready to launch, you can assign your crew to man it. Enter the Kerbals. These are your victims brave explorers who will crew your vessels.

Each Kerbal has their own set of skills, as Pilots, Scientists or Engineers… or Tourists, who have no skills whatsoever, but they pay a good deal for a ride. Crew skills will upgrade as they gain experience (from achieving new things), and specialized crewmembers provide their own set of abilities during a mission. Pilots are able to assist in maintaining stability, and later even lock on to moving targets or maneuvers. Scientists generate better experiment data, and can also restore experiment modules which would otherwise be single-use. Engineers can repair broken parts, and if you are setting up a mining operation, they can also get the most of your mining equipment.

Resource Mining is now in as of KSP 1.0. This allows you to deploy scanning missions, looking for ‘Ore’, set up mining bases in other worlds or even in asteroids (which can be redirected into capture orbits), and later process the Ore into fuel, so you can set up refueling stations and bases across the solar system and from there, go anywhere.

KSP has been a pet project of mine for over 10 years now, and it’s just unbelievable to finally see it reach completion after working on it for so long. I’m very, very happy about how the release turned out, and of course, we still have lots of plans for future updates.

I want to add my thanks to the Unity community and everyone at UT as well, who have really helped us out during development. Massive thanks to all you guys!

Cheers!

Awesome game!!

Very nice!

Congratulations!

I have been playing this game hundreds of hours. Congrats!

Congrats! KSP has been one of the most successful Early Access Games on Steam! I had no Idea that is was a Unity game - well done! Hopefully I can follow even slightly in your footsteps for our Early Access Release tomorrow night

I did not enter the game since 2013 aprox and it has changed a lot. Asteroids? Kerbal Skills? Mining? Debhon Aeronautics and Space Administration (DASA) returns!

PS: Happy to see Jeremiah Kerbal again :stuck_out_tongue:

Out of curiosity, how big a team worked on KSP?

Amazing one of my all time fav games

I spent about 100 hours playing this game and I’ve never been anywhere except the Mun. Still one of my favorite game of all time! Congratulations on your success!

An inspiration, I think its fair to say!

That is a strangely difficult question to answer, because a lot of people have come and gone over the course of development.

Currently, the regular dev team is 12-strong, not counting community, execs, and QA staff. The full roster of everyone who ever worked in the project though, has 54 people in total. (not counting the approx. 100-large team who tests experimental builds)

Cheers

I have had so much fun playing this. I would recommend it to anyone. I love the way it makes me feel like I could walk into NASA and launch a rocket for them. One of my favorite times was when I built a Mother ship and sent it too the Jool System.

So when are you going to add another solar system?

Congratulations. Kerbal Space Program is definitely a very unique and fun game. I had to uninstall it only because it was too addictive, but I might need to re-install it to experience the 1.0 version. Thanks for all of the hours of fun with KSP.

Wow now thats how you do it. 4 years

Congrats to this awesome game, a must have for all space fans out there!
Looking forward to whats to come : )

Congratulations! KSP is really nice and sometimes unreal for letting us create awful models. At least at my perpective. hehe
