Hello fellow unity users,
My main hook for a game is something I’ve had in concept/development since 2010. It’s a game titled “Alien Authority”. I originally developed this years ago in XNA for Xbox 360, but the project/premise kind of fell apart. Life, college, girlfriends, work, a lot of things sidelined this game I was working on.
Late last year I got some inspiration to re-develop my game. XNA is dead and was a very time consuming framework to develop on, so I started learning Unity. I literally picked this framework up over a few weeks, it’s a very easy and intuitive and I am a programmer by heart so most of it is pretty easy for me. I started throwing a re-imagined version of my game together in unity.
Here is a very, VERY rough/early idea for what my game is coming together as:

I know the quality kind of sucks so here is a higher quality screenshot of the models/graphics:

It’s a very simple game. Arcade-style similar to Heavy Weapon and the classic “Moon Patrol”. It’s space/sci-fi oriented. I don’t really want to complicate it with a storyline or anything, I just want a plain and simple arcade game. I just wanted peoples opinions on it so far. Does the gameplay look decent/fun at all? Does this look like a game you would enjoy playing on the PC (and possibly phone/consoles)? Does it look like it would be a good online co op game?
I want your honest and brutal opinions, please do not hold back. I dedicate a great deal of time to this over the years. I’m not sure if the premise of the game is good in 2014. It’s just in the back of my mind, I think it’s such a great idea if I made the game super polished and simple. I have a beautiful interface for the menu already with an original orchestral soundtrack even. But it’s the game itself that is important. The action bar on the side, eventually I wanted to allow the player change weapons themselves between rockets, lasers, and etc.
Here was the original version from 2011 that I did in XNA (which was more polished, nearly ready for release with boss fights/different stages and etc.):
The problem with the original was, for one it was a convoluted mess coding wise. Thousands of lines of code in a now dead XNA framework. Number two, I wasn’t sure if it was that good of a game or not. It was a hybrid of 2D/2D graphics. The thing is, I remember showing it to someone who was looking for a programmer for their game project, and they basically trashed my work acting as if it were elementary…
Going into it now, does it look better 3D or 2D? What about a concept for 8 bit graphics like making it an all-vintage game? What about a cartoon look? With this game, I always had the vision of it with realistic-style models/graphics rather than something cartoon-y.
I just want brutal opinions on this game. You won’t hurt my feelings, I’m a professional, I would rather hear it now than after wasting months on this game finishing it. The original and the Unity remake you can criticize. I’m on the fence about putting more time into this and finishing it or if I should go with a different concept all together (or different game). There aren’t many games out there like this with a tank , usually it’s “tutorial” level stuff but you never see people make a full blown, polished game out of it. Thanks for any feedback!
