Does only TMP work? Regular Unity UI seems to have garbled text?

good to know - might want to add this to the docs so people don’t spend forever trying to figure out why regular Unity UI text is garbled if there is a regular unity UI to TMP converter that will be great

Yes; only TextMeshPro text is supported. If you’d like support for legacy text, please submit it to the road map.
