Selling the sample Unity App on App Store?

Hello everybody,

I just saw something really amazing… somebody is selling the demo from Unity3D for iPhone, in the App Store:

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=303749208&mt=8

Apart from being not ethical to bill for it, Is this legal?

This has already been discussed to death. Yes, it’s legal because of the license for this content. No, it’s not ethical. Especially since the “developer” has filled the application description with completely irrelevant game titles in a search trolling attempt.

Is it still unethical if the assets on a demo will be used as one of the level(s) on a game even with proper credits given to the creator?

I’m asking because I intend to use Ethan’s race track on a racing game I’m trying to make.

Thanks,
Ray

Using Unity assets as part of your own creation is what they are intended for, I would say. That’s no different than buying models on Turbosquid or whatever. But just opening a demo, hitting “build”, and then claiming the result as your own app and uploading it (and especially charging for it) is what’s unethical. Taking a quick look at “other apps by” on iTunes, I see this particular dev seems to specialize in 99 cent shovelware garbage, so the lack of ethics isn’t really a surprise.

Wow, those reviews were great for a laugh. Sideways screenshot didn’t hurt, either.

Simple solution…

Release the same thing, but as a FREE app

Someone already did
