Don’t get hung up on the museum specifically. He’s saying, and I agree, that your environment lacks realism in a genre which severely punishes games that lack environmental realism.
It looks like you’ve put in some solid work into your game, but the FPS genre is dominated by a small number of AAA titles for a reason.
I give up making modelling after learning several blender courses. So I have to choose 3D models from asset store. I admit envriomental realism is a weakness.
Visually the game is unappealing. It doesn’t look like anything interesting to play. In particular you need to fix your color scheme. Beige on beige is just boring. Plus it makes your enemies artificially difficult to see.
Game play wise I see nothing interesting. You walk up to an enemy. It wakes up. You shoot it. Nothing that hasn’t been done better a thousand times already.
I’m curious why the chairs explode into a pile of blood. Chairs bleeding makes no sense. It looks as if you have just thrown in a lot of blood and gore just to be edgy. Don’t.
The UI generally looks unfinished.
Remember, this game is up to compete against Destiny and Fortnite and Halo and COD and whatever else is in the works. Its got to be good if its going to go anywhere.
Yes, it’s very clear that you’re being held back by your art skills. Unfortunately it’s a weakness you’re either going to have to make up on your own (and this may very well include you returning to modelling) or you’re going to have to find people able to do it for you. The Asset Store can only get you so far before you need skills in the appropriate fields.
By the way if you’re curious what an actual artist is capable of making with the store, check out this short video.
Except you will be in competition with AAAs by creating an FPS. Add survival mechanics and you will be in competition with companies like Bethesda that are now creating FPSes with survival mechanics. Unless you are creating a game that is unusual enough to have no meaningful competition (eg Dwarf Fortress) you will be competing with other games.
Speaking of art, you don’t have to be crazy details, realistic, expensive etc … You just need to be interesting, which is a skills in itself, and it can be distinct from uber art skills. SuperHot has a minimalistic approach, but it’s not random, it’s purposeful, therefore interesting.
But this is also true for gameplay and level design and any aspect of the game.
Which your game isn’t, it’s a diet version of everything:
ai is basic
level design is below average
visual is random mess
sound is typical
If you get interesting you can find a niche.
Try that, make a fps that can be played eyes close, if you are good you can do it.
a huge history of history of good fps, if you are below their quality, people will just play old fps, people still play old doom, and someone discovered the last secret of doom 2 only recently. You are competing with history.
every day indie release basic fps games, there is a large offering you don’t fill the gap if you are not better
people play teh big AAA games as a lifestyle, Warframe was released long time ago, and it still has a lot of recurring player. WORSE, counter strike was released during the nineties, it is still a significant played game. They won’t play your games, simply has that, game aren’t “consummable” like a mcdonald snack.
