Update 1.4 has been submitted to the Asset Store and is our best update yet!
*With the new 1.4 update we’ve added 3 new candles all behaving and moving much more realistic (Similar to Skyrim). Candles now sway and flicker more than before so they look great both close and far.
*1.4 Updated the FAQ and documentation with even more helpful tips to get the best out of your effects and explains how to adjust everything.
@Koyima Thanks, I saw your horror game and it looks awesome. This pack could really add to the feel with candles and light shafts in a dark eire room or area.
Hi, I just bought your product from within the Asset store but I’m not able to use it because when importing I get the error: Error while importing package: Couldn’t decompress package.
I already deleted it from the cache and redownloaded and imported it but no luck so far.
Frankly, finding the statement in the AS description “volume light to your scenes at no cost to performance” as HIGHLY suspect, especially in regards to anything with transparency effects / affecting fill rate.
Maybe true in a nearly empty demo scene running at 120fps with no gameplay, but in real world projects how does the “no cost to performance” claim hold up?
Also, what qualifies the “Ultimate” in the name? See this tired moniker everywhere on Asset Store, and rarely find the reality matches the claim (is just misleading in most cases)
It hasn’t been tested by us, but we have had about 3 or 4 customers ask the same question. They bought the effects system solely for mobile and didn’t have any problems and they were pleased with the results.
The fake volumetric lights only use one texture and the shader used can be switched to the mobile transparent shader so they are more efficient. The candle effects work the same except they use a particle emitter. If you wanted to use them on mobile you would simply change the shader to the mobile transparent shader and lower the amount of particles emitted.
The system does have 5 stars and we have had a few emails regarding how much the customers liked the system There’s nothing misleading about the pack. It’s an effect system that includes many high quality light effect materials and candle effects which all have endless possibilities.
So yes, people have used these effects on mobile devices and haven’t had any issues.
As for performance it only uses 1 draw call per effect and the system fakes volumetric light similar to how the games Oblivion or Skyrim do.
Ok, was looking for quality light-beam effects, and came across this package. The screenshots looked nice and the marketing claims suggested it might fit the bill, so to speak.
So purchased it but like others here, was greatly disappointed. I should have heeded the red flags but didn’t.
Nobody likes negative feedback, so this post will likely not be well received, but honestly, if customers don’t speak up against blatantly misleading / deceptive packages such as this, then how will the Asset Store thrive long term?
Here is the review I left:
@ Dev
This may be popular or have 5 stars (from a total of 1 customers, btw), but my guess is, it is popular with users who don’t know any better. Would hope you, as an Asset Store dev, would strive for more than apparently being content fooling people who don’t know any better for some quick cash. From my view, it is shameful how bad this is.
That said, if you absolutely must continue to sell this package, maybe make it at an honest price; like $1-3? That way, professional devs can know right away that it is a joke, and not waste their time.
We have sold this pack many times and have never had a bad review, not to mention when people buy direct through our website.
You clearly didn’t understand the previous post when we said it was untested for mobile devices; other than the packs we sold to mobile developers who told us there were no problems.
So lets break down your review and I will try to respond in a professional manner.
Yes, the package does use Unity’s built-in shaders what else would it use? You can clearly see from the videos that the effects aren’t real volumetric lights. The description also says “Effects use a billboarding script to give a 3d looking HD light effect such as candle glows, light shafts beams, glows, and glares.”
The pack is a little older and was one for the first effects packs available on the asset store. Excuse the unorganized assets, it has been a little while since we’ve updated the pack, but the only thing that is unorganized is that the system isn’t all in one folder. Everything is still properly labeled and in organized folders.
I didn’t see once where we even mentioned mobile devices, like we said in the post before it was untested, but there have been others that said it worked fine, the system was developed for desktop not mobile.
The name says it all, it’s an HD pack of textures that are billboarded with a custom script to achieve volumetric looking effects. There’s nothing deceiving about it. Oblivion and Skyrim both use this exact technique to achieve their light effects in order to have great preforming light effects.
I think if people have felt deceived there would have been multiple bad reviews. I’m sorry if you felt deceived but the description and demo videos show and say it all.
You must also realize that there’s a reason why the pack is $25 dollars, it comes with 7 candle particle systems, 13 light effect textures, and 8 models. So I really don’t see where the problem is. If you’re unhappy with the package then by all means you can refund it and get your money back.
Please don’t attack our product when you misunderstood what you were getting because we’re not out to just take your money. This was originally developed for people with Unity free to get great looking effects without having to own the pro version of Unity.
The videos show how the product looks exactly in both scenes that are included, so I don’t understand why when you purchased it, you’re seeing it differently. That’s why we have the videos so people get exactly what they see.
Clearly you just took 1 small non-essential piece of my feedback and made your whole rebuttal about that, while ignoring the more salient relevant parts. Nice tactic.
So… went ahead removed that from both the post and review. Now can you say I misunderstood it?
To be clear, have no interest in arguing with you. You sell this, I bought it, and was completely disappointed by it and don’t mind saying why. If you want to blame the customer, go ahead. At least others will see my experience how you handle unfavorable feedback.
Since you mentioned it, normally don’t ask for refunds, esp. for such a small amount, but will request one due to your absolute unwillingness to see any truth to the feedback that I and others have made about this pack. Again, posting here because this pack makes quality developers (who are out for more than a quick buck repackaging built-in Unity assets) look bad and degrades the Asset Store overall.
Sorry it didn’t work out to your liking sorry you cannot take criticism; better luck with your next asset!
No one is arguing, I clearly defended our product, professionally. There’s a difference between feedback and attacking. I covered every single thing you said, not just one, and replied to it in a professional manner. I still don’t really understand what changed your mind with the product from when you saw both videos, till when you purchased it. They are the exact same scene and demo that are included in the pack. I do apologize that you were unsatisfied with the product and I hope you find what you’re looking for.
No because the particles are too small and they’re made for candles. You might be able to get it to work, it would require some tweaking to the particle effects, but no promises.
Please redo the packaging of the asset as it scatters a lot of different assets all over the project. For example place your asset in a single sub-folder as follows.
