Unity huge maps?

We’re trying to develop a game that has a very large gameplay area, around the size of Portugal. How would we go about doing this, and what would be the problems we’ll come up against creating such a large area for a game?
Note: The map will be mostly sea + coastline, so shouldn’t be too graphically intense in terms of buildings etc.

Also caves, I presume caves arent do-able with the raise/lower tools? Would I have to model a cave? How would I go about doing this so it would slide into the terrain? Need some caves for our shoreline map.

Thats correct, the caves must be modelled.
Unitys terrain is a heightmap based terrain, so a single “ground” basically.

As for the large terrain: You would use Unity Pro and use several terrain blocks which you link against each other dynamically at runtime after you load them from Asset bundles and unload them again if you don’t need them.
