Nothing. Unity 4 is no longer supported. ![]()
Yes it is…! They are still releasing updates. Where do you get this info from?
I’d much rather see “Powered by Unity” than the current one… it’s just miles better. “Personal Edition” kinda reminds me of those early youtube videos with the hypercam watermark…
Guys:
- make an awesome game
- put it to sale
- gain $$$
- buy pro and get rid of splash screen
- ???
- Profit! … wait, what?
that said I also don’t like the wording on the new splash screen, powered by unity was indeed much better, I think I would feel humiliated for being poor
Just because it has makes no difference for us, the developers, doesn’t mean it is meaningless to Unity. That “Personal Edition” line may make help players associate bad games (more of them will be released with the free edition) with “Oh, it was made in the Personal Edition, that’s probably why it sucked” instead of the old association of “Oh, it was made in Unity. Fuck Unity”.
Are associations such as these prevalent or even important? I don’t know.
No, I am ambivalent about it. You could conclude that figuratively everyone wants it, if you wish ![]()
Even though you just said that players will think that “Personal Edition” games will suck?
Unfortunately, a bit over a year ago most dictionaries added to the definition of “literally” to include hyperbole for emphasis. So “literally” is now synonymous with “figuratively”. There is literally no word for what literally used to mean. ![]()
While I get what people are saying, (and maybe it could be worded differently), the reality is players are seeing the splash screen they have already downloaded/bought the game, and started to play it. At that point it is all on the developer. Players aren’t going to buy/install a game, launch it and then instantly force quit at the splash screen because they see “Personal Edition”.
But they might have second thoughts about upgrading freeware if it looks at all dodgy.
Who on the internet is going to humiliate you for being poor?
I swear 90% of the internet is people claiming to be poor. Also, I think it’s more likely that, while you’re using the personal license, you will still have an audience that understands where you’re coming from. By the time your audience would complain about that sort of thing, you’ll probably will have made enough money to upgrade. You have to upgrade at a certain profit level anyways.
Another note; Man, a lot of people are really extreme with their reactions to this stuff. On Monday, people were acting like a Walmart had just opened next to the one and only local store in town. Now people are whining about their free version of Unity, which now includes all of the features of the engine itself, has a sticker on it.
But that’s the internet.
I for one am excited to have access to, and develop for, both. It’s a wonderful thing that I can put on my resume that I have experience developing for two, top-tier game engines. On top of that, it’s easier than ever, as a solo hobbyist (maybe I should get a team someday…) to develop games with a high level of quality.
So exciting times these are. Exciting times!
Internet? I think you misunderstood, what i meant is, if I ship a game with that wording i would feel embarrassed and humiliated for not affording having unity 5 pro.
But I thought I was being obvious with the whole “profit meme” thing, while I do think the wording in the splash screen could be better I also think it’s not the huge problem people are making it to be. You could very well make an awesome game, sell it, get enough money out of it and get the pro version if that screen really bothers you.
These are indeed exciting times, even source 2 was announced ^^
Yes, they made it too distinctive about the free edition calling it “Personnal” on the splash screen.
They just need to remove or change the words like “Unity Powered” and it will be ok.
But when the reviews of your game are done , they will state : it was made with a free version for hobbyst, not the Pro version of the engine. And many people can misunderstood that , and forget all work and investment that have been put on the game even using the Free edition.
Then don’t make a dodge looking game.
Actually the press and reviewers aren’t stupid people like you’re trying to make out. They’re smart, write well and fully understand it’s engine feature complete.
After all they’re reporting that right now. It’s not as if they don’t know. Actually, everyone knows. It’s huge news that the free (personal) version has the same features.
You are 100% correct of course, but nitpicking the wording gives us something to do while we pretend to work.
It’s possible that they will instead be impressed by how good the game is despite the obviously low budget, is it not?
I find people have worse reactions to hearing a lot of money was spent on something of sub-par quality (AAA being the standard to the public eye, for better or worse), than they do knowing that something was even made in the first place for next to no monies.
I did not say that at all. I doubt it will make more people think your game will suck than if it just showed the Unity logo.
Or wait for Enlighten to crawl so slowly it goes backwards in time.
Who said Enlighten not be good ?
