That CPU was never ‘amazing’ - it did have a niche market as a bang-for-buck alternative, but even that is probably non-existent now.
Intel have had new architecture and a new process (and have had since the beginning of the year) and even AMD have their next gen CPU coming out sometime soon.
I’m using a Macbook pro, I7, Quad core, 8GB RAM, AMD 6750, 256GB SSD main drive. I replaced the DVD a 500GB 7200RPM hd, since I’d only used it once. Usually I run OSX and run VMWare fusion with Windows 7.
Overall I find this well suited to graphics and game development, plus I can take it with me wherever I go (like to BUILD next week.)
I just had my ass handed to me. Let me explain what I meant. I meant I have a lesser version of the phenom x6 and find it absolutely amazing. Its the fastest processor I have ever had, and I beat almost everyone I know (or play against) in loading times on games. The phenom II brand processor is certainly not “a $#!^ CPU” it is fantastic.

Just so you all know aside from my job and hobby of game design I’ve been building PC’s for 10+ years I know what I’m doing and my new processor is a six-core cpu and here is the hardware I’m getting in detail for all those confused -

I am a diehard AMD fan, and the phenom II series was pretty good. But since Sandy Bridge it has had a much smaller market niche - and it has never been the companion for a 3 GPU system
I read all over the place and I was careful about how I’m setting my my new rig. I’m not running 3way sli only 2way the 3rd card is for computing nvidia physics. I only trust AMD and nvidia however the only AMD product I absolutely dislike is ATI graphics cards(now AMD graphics cards). The reason being is I’ve tried three supposedly really good ATI cards and in 80% of my games I had graphical glitches or certain graphics options unusable but when I tried an equal in performace nvidia card I had no graphics glitches(textures and meshes not appearing where they should or when they should) and those disabled graphics options when the ATI card was in were now enabled and usable.
That’s what scares me… if you know so much about hardware why do you continually bring up the six cores?
If you said you needed the 6 cores for [x,y,z] application in the interim and are waiting to plug in a high end bulldozer upon release I could understand your strategy. But just referring to the core count… is no reflection on its ability.
I’d also like to know what applications you are running than not only require a dedicated GPU for physx… but requires a GTX 580! You sure you couldn’t save a few hundred (and a ton of heat&power) by going to a nice mid-range card?
Don’t recognize the PSU brand - so I’ll assume you’ve looked into it beyond the gold rating.
The SSD you’ve got is one of the slowest I know of. So I hope it’s very affordable, got a great warranty etc. (If it’s just for speeding up your system it should be fast enough). But since it’s so cheap - why not splash out and get 256GB?
Also, getting a WD 2TB black maybe a noisy experience - since you’ve got a SSD why not get a green drive or two? It’ll even buy you takeaway in the process
I play PC games alot and some of the newer games use nvidia physics and its very gpu intensive. As for the processor its just for speed purposes my computer is usually the host pc among my friends when we lan our computers to play StarCraft 2. ASUS is a very popular motherboard company they make very good motherboards and yes that board I’m getting I believe is gold or higher. I said the six core count again in my last post cause in one of your previous posts you said something about “3 GPUS” and I thought you said “3 CPUS”. So that was my fault I wouldn’t have mentioned it again had I caught that lol my bad. Well thats one of the only good ones SDD wise that new egg has if you know a better SDD let me know please :). And I like the black editions of WD cause they’re faster then the greens although since my SDD is the main drive I can see your point.
For SSD’s take a look at the SDD’s mentioned in that review - compare the cost difference yourself.
I’d personally get 2 2TB greens and raid 1 'em, or get 3 cheap 1TB’s and raid 5 'em. This way you’ll have great read speeds (for putting data onto your ssd) and some redundancy. Obviously the exact size of the drive depends on the Bang for Buck where you are.
I’ve never raided before too skeptical about it. As for intel its a price issue it would make my machine go from 2.8k to about 4k. If I could I would want to get the Intel Core i7 990X processor. Its one of the best from what I’ve read in this pole and from various other sites and customer reviews.
My box is relatively conservative I guess compared to those cooking boxes some people waste their money on to realize that Unity doesn’t give a shit about CF / SLI, that half the games don’t and that the hardware in 2 years makes it look like a pile of crap at 1/3 of the price and 1/4 of the energy consumption

The two of them share one of my 2 27" 1920x1200 screens as well as my Logitech G15 keyboard and logitech g9 mouse and they feed several external harddisks on FW800 / eSATA as well as my 3x 1TB RAID5 based homeserver (Core 2 Duo E6600 on 4GB RAM)
It’s weakest point right now is the graphics card, which means I get about 40 fps on most games (which can quickly be reduced to 20 depending on settings). I’m hoping to replace it with a 1 gb card sometime soon.
