What kind of hardware are you using to make your games?

Hello I’m just curious as to what computer set ups you all are using. My current computer specs are these

Motherboard - BioStar
Processor - AMD Althalon II 3.2Gigahertz DualCore
Memory - 4Gigs
VideoCard - Nvidia 8500GT
PowerSupply - 850Watt
Cooling - 2 Fans (80mm rear, 120mm side)

I’m ordering a new computer in the next two weeks its specs are as follows (one more paycheck to go :smile:)

Motherboard - ASUS
Processor AMD Phenom II 3.2Gigahertz Hexcore
Memory - 12Gigs
VideoCard - 3x Nvidia Geforce 580 (Two running sli and one for nvidia physics)
PowerSupply - 1250Watt
Cooling - 4 Fans(1 side 200mm, 2 front 120mm, 1 rear 140mm)

i dont even remember my specs, i usually just buy parts off newegg for around 8 - 900 bucks and put it all together using recycled PSU, CDrom and non-critical’s about every 2 or 3 years, depends on how the machine is running current games. I typically just buy a new one if I have to start putting things on Low detail to run properly.

I decided to get crazy and purchased something similar (ATI instead of nVidia), only to realize that I live in a desert. 3 of those video cards will bake you alive. I ended up removing my crossfire configuration because even though my computer was ‘cool,’ all that heat was being vented into my room. Central air conditioners really aren’t equipped to handle localized temperature imbalances.

I live in a rather cold climate most of the time so I’m not worried and I rigged a special storage case in my room that my pc fits into that vents all its heat directly outside so the heat issue is no problem.

using really old hardware. i’ll get an i7 with 8 gig at some point, mostly for compile times, beast baking and so on.

Um… it’s a PC thingy, Windows 7, enough memory to open up more than one copy of Visual Studio simultaneously, bit of secondary storage, video card doodad, and six honking big** LCD panels. :slight_smile: I know nothing about computers at all. :wink:

My current PC is over three years old and can’t run any new games (mostly the graphics card is the issue). The main reason I’m overkilling it with my new set up is so I can run 3DS max, Unity, and Monodevelop at the same time and still cut down on bake times and Occlusion Culling Calculation Times. The faster my PC can bake things the better :smile:

a mac will lead to faster baking times than the PC though, and more capable baking times. Since beast is 64 bit on that :slight_smile:

yes macs are awesome but not customizable like the PC. But I do plane to get a mac eventually. Not to replace my PC but to aid in game development.

The PC I built was from the year 2007. My current specs are:

Intel Core 2 Duo 2.6 (overclocked to 2.9) GHz
2 Gigs RAM
ATI Radeon 2600 XT 256MB
Windows XP SP3

I can still play GTA 4 and almost every game up to Dead Island, but I usually have to put the resolution down to 800x600 while putting the graphical enhancements to the lowest possible. Sometimes, all I need to do is disable the shadows and everything’s smooth.

I really need a new machine, I need an I7 with all the modern hardware since it would greatly help in a lot of work that I need to do especially in rendering animations and the like :slight_smile:

imo the only thing thats better about windows is visual studio. I love my mac

Well i like Linux more but sense Unity don’t work in Linux am using windows next time i get a mac is close to Linux then windows

I’m not here to debate which is better imo they’re both great and each one has their own outstanding qualities and not so outstanding qualities for example price wise PC’s are way cheaper on the other hand macs are more stably built and way less prone to crash or get viruses. I will be a proud owner of both when I get the money for a mac :slight_smile:

@hippocoder when I do decide to get a mac which one would you recommend? (seeings how your a mac person :P)

13 inches Mac Book Pro Early 2011 which has core i5 2.3 ghz dual core, and 4gb of ram 1333 mhz and intel hd graphics 3000

a somewhat basic setup , nothing too fancy, but its enough

Just a word for advice… that PC spec you just listed - don’t buy it.

The lack of model numbers scares me. The lack of cooling scares me. The 3 GPU’s scares the shit out of me.

But importantly, your buying what looks to be $2.5~3k worth of hardware and getting a #!^ CPU.

Give us detailed specs, and I might just be able to save you a ton of hassle.

I have that CPU, chances are its the 1090T… I’ve yet have it get maxed on anything so I’m unsure where your comment about the CPU comes in. The scariest thing about that system is the temperature factor, but since the OP lives in cool weather and is apparently venting out, everything should be fine.

My pc is ancient, need to stop spending cash and get myself a new set up. Im running on a Dell 3100c, that might tell you how old it is :wink:
