Hello all! I have another wonderful Windows 8 (non)user friendly error.
I am trying to change my file type to a .raw from World Machine, as to convert it for terrain data, but my computer automatically sets it up as a WinRAR file and even if I change the ending to .raw, it remains as that file type. Because there is no default program for unzipping raw files, what can I do?
Download an opener for that file format, say GIMP for example (I think GIMP opens RAW, but don’t quote me on this).
It’s simple windows attempting to set a default program for it, unity will still use it perfectly fine, windows file defaults only matter when you doubleclick the file in the windows explorer.
Alternitivly you could set your winrar prefferences to not support .raw files, this might change the default, but the icon may stay.
Thanks for the reply. I need to convert the actual file into raw though. If I set anything else as the default, it become the file type ( its different in Windows 8 ). Because Unity knows what the .raw file type is, when I convert something else from Unity ( say an .ASSET file ) it turns to a raw file easy as you please. The only problem is when I want to convert a non-Unity file ( aka the RB16 file type from World Machine ) it stays as the default file and simply adds dots ( . ) to the name.
Firstly, its still a RAW file. It clearly shows that its a .RAW - raw is the format, you have installed winrar on your computer, and for whatever reason you’ve associated it to try and open that file type.\
Raw itself is usually a type of image format, if unity wont load it, its because its not saved in the correct raw format. Photoshop can load it up, and export it into the correct one.
You need to do more than just change the extension of a file to make it the correct format
I did not actually associate the file myself, it was automatic. And its not a raw file (which is my problem) even though I named it.raw it still thinks its a WinRAR archive as you can see on the right. Unity does not recognize it.
I exported to photoshop and it would not accept the file either. I was stuck again. I went back to building and exporting in World Machine and found when it was exporting, it was calling it a bit16 file. So before export I renamed it to .raw and it worked.
Thanks for everyones help, its always appreciated.
You aren’t listening to him. It is not a WinRAR file. You have associated the file with WinRAR. It is not a WinRAR file.
It is still a RAW file. If you open it with Gimp, or another image program that handles RAW format, you’ll see that it’s still exactly the same as it ever was.
Windows determines ‘type’ of file by what program you assign to that extension. You have assigned .RAW to WinRAR on your computer.
You can claim it was automatic, but WinRAR only assigns the file extensions that you allow. At some point, you told it to do that. It did not do it without permission.
Okay, thanks for the clarification wccrawford. Sorry, larvantholos.
And to support my claim, the first time I ever built the bit16 file, it came out as a WinRAR. I am not trying to start an argument here, not at all, but its the truth, I assure you.
