2d main menu vs 3d main menu?

Whats your opinion on this?

My opinion is that they’re the same thing. A 2D menu is just an arrangement of flat things in a 3D space. Alternatively, a so-called 3D menu is just a projection of some shapes onto a 2D plane.

:stuck_out_tongue:

In all seriousness, what’s the actual question? The one you’ve posed so far is incredibly open and doesn’t really lead to a lot. Do you mean 3D like the one Bioshock Infinite has, or like the one Quake has, or one like Super Smash Bros? And what is it that you care to know about them?

For what it’s worth, the menu is probably the first thing people will see of your game after your logo. First impressions are important, make it count.

I have my GUI-Elements on a separate layer, everything 3D.
It´s much easier to control position, scale, rotation and so on.

Most games I see with 3D menus are lame. I prefer a basic menu in a game. Final Fantasy games do menus really well.

they can be a combination- for instance 3d hills with a 3d character, combined with 2d buttons and stuff

we’ve just made a space game on mobile and one of the ‘cool’ ideas was to have 3D menu that the camera would fly around with planets and asteroids in the background. While the idea is nice, it was a complete ball ache to implement and maintain. The theroy was nice, and the idea of using 3d objects to get around the GUI issue was good, but not recommended.

A nice 3d background with flat sprites, thats the way to go.

Totally dependent on game and implementation.

Impossible to even consider answer with so few variables.

What if you do away with the menu entirely and integration the options/choices into the game environment?

perhaps you’re looking for a bit of a mix? use your space environment as the 3d backdrop, and then overlay it with 2d buttons
