$75,000 dev grant to game developer by game engine...

Gamasutra article on issue of $75,000 dev grant by another game engine.

UT just asking but have you considered development grants to Unity game developers?

Unity is likely leading and thus doesn’t need to.

Personally I would rather Unity invest every penny it has into hiring more AAA staff that will optimise the engine so it beats the competition in performance.

Doesn’t making the engine better, automatically result in better games to show it off?

I think the Unity awards cube is pretty cool, and I would like to try and win one of those. Just my 2p.

Well the games looks pretty good anyway. Tossing out a few grand to winners

I’m all for that but the PR team could get together with other sponsors and put out a dangle the carrot, cash awards based game development challenge.

Especially if the engine has been tuned up and refined so it’s purring like a F1 racer and UT want to show it off!

I think their Unite showcase line-ups are almost the same, they get to show the engine use and developers get their game shown.

There is not really need for them to pay devs to do stuff they would do anyways. It’s better use all the cash to improve the engine like hippo said, or to things like 5.4 beta sweepstakes rewards that will help everyone.

I doubt 70k is going to make much difference to the engine though. Those guys could have probably raised the 70k by themselves on kickstarter easily anyway. So its almost like why bother

But what if there are some good Unity games/demos that without a challenge to spur their developers on and that cash injection to invest in their game, their game will never be the great game it could be?

I’m not saying the prize money has to be $75k maybe $10k or $5k would be enough to just push their game over the threshold from good to great.

Also it’s not which game engine is leading it’s which game engine has the best PR, if the other game engines outperform in the PR game they will win mind share over time.

There were some competitions in the past with prizes of up to $10k.
Usually these competitions are held when a dying platform gets newly added to Unity’s export capabilities

Yea, they look pretty damn good and pretty far along.
It’s pretty good move on Epic’s part. They are trying pretty hard to sell their engine, investing in games like that could be helpful to them.

Your arguements are fundamentally flawed. They don’t give grants to just anyone despite how beautiful and successful the game is guaranteed to be. The dev grant goes to those who need funds to support their development and no they cant just use a Kickstarter. There’s alot of countries that not a single one of those things work with due to ip block and I live in one such country. They factor in the devs situation and the likeliness the money won’t just be used wastefully without the game being completed. They don’t want any runners. By having a game that is far along and looks successful, it pretty much gives them a guarantee that this dev is serious. Why would u even waste money encouraging people to build what the general playerbase would consider garbage(i don’t share this sentiment as I believe every creation is art in its own way). So u see giving grants is actually a good thing as it helps those who can see the light but not reach it and also encourages others to excel and not settle for mediocrity.

Plus unreal makes alot of cash considering more AAA titles use unreal. Infact tbh unreal is close to surpassing unity in terms of popularity

This thread is 4 years old and also Unity still has an overwhelming marketshare when it comes to gamedev and various industry applications.

Every time someone necropost a really old thread and i remember being created back then.
