I have been doing the download install cycle for a few days now. It seems that Unity decides to stop working whenever I get interested in Battlestar Galactica Online (four or five times now), which may be an indication of why their player base has drastically fallen off. Live Demo shows the error. Other Unity games show the error. Going to the unity cache page shows the error.
Anyway, I receive the message
A newer version of Unity Web Player is required, but the auto-update download failed.
and I’m asked to manually download the webplayer to correct the error.
The latest webplayer I’m able to get is
Version of your web player
Unity Plugin version: 4.3.4f1
I’m using Revo Uninstall, CCleaner, Malwarebytes (the last couple of installs), Nortons 360 to make sure I’m getting everything removed and ready for the next attempt. The browsers I’m testing on are Chrome (preferred since Unity runs fastest on it), IE 10, Firefox 24(? its updating again).
As many posters have mentioned there seems to be a cycle of uninstalling, downloading, installing that never seems to end. I even took the two days to download the full gigabyte unity package that I really, really didn’t want to do. Neither source of the webplayer resolved the update bug.
A computer search confirmed that I don’t have the IDM (Internet Download Manager) installed. I’m downloading the exe files to my computer and installing from there, so it shouldn’t be a cab/proxy issue.
Let me know what you guys think. I’m so frustrated with Unity.
