Any advice on royalty free music and sound effects for games?

I was wondering if anyone could recommend any good resources of royalty free audio for simple iphone projects, I don’t need much, about 6 sound effects or so and a single (or possibly 2) backing tracks that only need to be a minute long.

I’m happy to pay a little, but I don’t really know what’s a reasonable asking price for this kind of thing - I had a quick look at at http://www.audiomicro.com/ but the total cost of 2 very short pieces of music and 6 sound effects came to about $100 \ £60 which seemed really steep to me.

any thoughts on this?

it says it cant guarantee that they are legal to use in commercial works, only for “personal use” (which I assume is non-commercial).

if we cant use the sound effects in games we sell, it’s a bit pointless for the more serious developers.

I like:

http://www.soundsnap.com/ for effects
and
http://www.musicloops.com/ for music

you could try http://stockmusicboutique.com there’s a good free section of music tracks.

I see a lot about buying stock music in there but very little about what tools to use to create your own… I have a small skill in playing music, so I am curious of what tools are out there for creation on a PC (Windows) nowadays. Any thoughts on packages to try?

This can be used to make your own.

Best I’ve found: http://incompetech.com/m/c/royalty-free/

EDIT: Oops, should have payed more attention to post. This is royalty free music.

I’ve used Premium Beat, they have a good selection of music and the listings are easy to browse… also available are full tracks and loops.

That’s basically what I’m looking for except I want something that’s a standalone package, not a web-based app. Any thoughts? I.E. similar to that but a local VST-using creation program (DAW).

Also, I know this will sound dumb but… do these things require a hardware keyboard (i.e. piano keyboard) to use effectively?

Thanks for the replies guys.

This is my favorite too.

Those prices listed aren’t bad at all, even for non-exclusive use.

I like Sonar on windows, possibly also Reason depending on the style of music. For Mac there is Logic (and again Reason).

With a mic and Sonar/Logic you can also easily create your own sound effects (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foley_(filmmaking))

FL Studio (formerly Fruity Loops) on Windows hasn’t let me down. Their licenses never expire either… upgrades are always free.

This is not free, but pretty cheap, and the quality is excellent, easily searchable, and adaptable.

soundsnap.com has a great collection of easily searchable quality sounds.

Check out All or Bust: Music Pack, 14 royalty free loopable songs that I made for games.

And then check out Mixcraft 5, its very intuitive sequencer software, think garage band for windows!

I am a composer for Sony BMG , Chappell and Universal.

Here are my non exclusive tracks at the lowest prices on the net…

High quality drama scores, piano works, orchestral pieces, choral work, funk, hip hop and electronica.

Probably some of the best royalty free music on the net at the lowest prices of between $2.00-$3.95 a track.

My music is featured on Big Brother, MTV, Sky Sports, Top Gear and others.
