Best laptop for Game Development of 2016?

Hey everyone!

Bugdet: 800-1200 dollars
Lightweight: Since i will be carrying it around (i am a student)

Hi everyone at the moment i am considering buying a new laptop since my old one is becoming pretty old. Therefore i would like to make the best decision as possible with the help of your experiences. The games i usually make on Unity are small mobile games and not anywhere like Rust and so on.

I have been looking around but figured out why not ask you guys

Thanks

If all you’re doing is mobile and you want it for student work, probably you want it to be light with good battery too.

I’d recommend a LG Gram, the exquisitely beautiful Asus Zenbook 3 ux390UA, a HP Spectre x360 or even a Razer Blade Stealth. If you’d be willing to sacrifice a bit on the performance/price ratio, you could even look into the Surface line. I can imagine for a student a Surface Pro 3-4 would be really nice. It’s impossible to state 1 laptop as the best, as there are different laptops for different purposes. If you wanted good gaming performance, you’d go with a more power-hungry laptop with a discrete Nvidia chip. However that sacrifices weight and battery life.

Also, since you aren’t asking for Editor support, I would have put this question in General Discussion. Just my 2 cents.

Thank you so much for taking the time to answer. Right now i am splitted between the HP Spectre x360 (because of the lower price) and the Asus Zenbook 3. Not quite sure which one to choose. Both beautiful and fantastic computers at each of their price levels.

(The LG Gram looks interesting too)

I really like the Dell XPS 13 but at the same time this ASUS is really good value!? or what do you think?

And what do you think would fit me best? 16 gb ram og or 8 gb ram

The link you posted is pretty nice too, as well as the Dell XPS 13. Really, they are all great laptops and it’s a hard pick for you to make.

All the computers I own have 8GB RAM, and I rarely wish for more. 16GB is definitely nice to have, but 8GB is enough for most applications so it isn’t really a deal breaker. Plus, if you’re a bit handy with a screwdriver, most laptops let you replace RAM and storage.

What about the ssd 256 or 512? Im really thinking about buying the expensive dell but its magnificient

As a current 240GB SSD owner I can tell you that bigger SSD is always better. Using my laptop with a mechanical hard drive now makes it seem so slow compared to my desktop PC with the SSD + mechanical hard drive.

If you don’t feel comfortable enough taking apart your laptop to put in a larger SSD for cheaper, and you really need more than 256GB of storage, get the 512. If you don’t need more than 256GB (or prefer to use an external hard drive, since those are really cheap), then get the 256GB.

Well i have never tried to do that. Seems pretty cool though

It’s not that hard, there are plenty of YouTube videos showing SSD replacements on the Dell XPS 13, along with other laptops.

I was forced to take apart my old laptop (Asus N53SN) because its hard drive broke so I replaced it, backups saved me

So lets say i bought a dell xps 13 i7 8gb ram 256 GB ssd could i replace the ram and ssd?

RAM is soldered in :(, but SSD is removable/replaceable.

As you see, it’s pretty straightforward. Screws on the back, one screw for the SSD. HOWEVER, I can’t seem to find a 512GB PCIe SSD for under $150, so there’s no need for that because unless you can find one for under $150, there’s no point in paying more and having to take it apart.

Im really torn apart between the Dell XPS 13 and the ASUS Zenbook UX310UQ. They got the exact same specs expect that the ASUS weights a little more (200 grams) and the battery life is not as great either. - but if a buy the ASUS i would save 2000 kr.! which is about 280 dollars.

Yeah the Dell is really pricey, and $280 is a lot of money. I’d recommend looking at all models, not just the ones I listed off the top of my head, and find the perfect laptop. It might take some time, you’ll have to live with it for years, so choose well!

For that much money there are much more powerful laptops out there with quad-core CPU’s and Nvidia GPU’s, however they eat a lot of battery so that’s something to consider. Also worth looking at is the Asus Zenbook Pro UX501VW, it’s really powerful so I’m concerned about the battery life. Since the Sony Vaio Z i7 model is on sale, that’s worth looking at too.

If I had to pick my dream laptop, because I have a nice desktop PC I wouldn’t need an Nvidia GPU in a laptop, I’d get the Midnight Blue Asus Zenbook 3, simply because of the amazing blue-gold finish. But that’s only for rich people :frowning:

But like what is the difference between the ASUS Zenbook Pro UX501 and the Asus Zenbook UX310Q

I have by the way looked at a lot of reviews and most of them choose the Dell XPS 13. It’s so fucking pricey, but it got an amazing battery life weighs almost nothing, it’s really powerful (or i think so) and the design is nice too.

But does it have a shitty graphics card anc CPU? the Dell XPS 13?

Intel HD graphics, so yeah, it’s shit. Really, when you buy that the reason people love it is the looks, the weight, the battery life and the speed. However it’s not a gaming powerhouse. If you want to play games, there are lots of other less-battery-efficient laptops that will crush it with Nvidia 1060m’s inside. Kind of like the Macbook Pro, there are graphics, but they are nothing to brag about.

Where do you see an Asus Zenbook UX310Q? I can only find the UX310UA and the UX31A. Here’s the UX501VW.

ASUSZenbook UX310UQ i meant this one. But at the same time. Im not going to be the one doing blender or photoshop. Im just the programmer. I don’t wanna buy anything extremly overkill

Here you can compare their CPU’s: http://ark.intel.com/compare/95451,88967
The UX501VW has 4 cores, which is really, really nice (the Dell has 2). It also has a larger battery because of those cores.

The UX501VW is a much more powerful laptop. I’m a bit concerned about battery life, but Windows does have power saver modes which could work well.

But its really heavy

What do you think about this one? The battery kinda sucks (only 5 hours) and it weighs about 2.8 kg unfortunately
