My approach as a start-up solo indie was taken from the idea of building small game/prototypes and releasing them as test cases for player feedback. I used Kongregate as a testbed for the games potential and the theory was if it was a success on their I would earn some income and then be able to extend/complete and launch the games on other platforms.
*NB Kongregate will only pay out when the revenue stream reaches 25, so revenue from 1 year with Unity 0, or negative if you factor in the licensing fees (yes I paid for basic Android and iOS before they went free!).
I have also released Zombie Gnomes attack on Android but due to very poor sales I set it to free.
It’s hard work making average games, very hard to make good games, and it takes time to learn how to game great games!
Then you have to know how to make money from them!
Note Kongregate only pays out via paypal when advertisement royalties hits $25, income is $0 so far, although at current rate of $0.52 a month I should be eligible for the first payment in November!
Kongregate is a very poor source of income unless your game utilizes Kreds. I watched a presentation by their CFO, and they get 80%+ of their revenue from just ~140 kreds-enabled games. All said and done, you get about $1 per 1000 plays, which equates to about a $1000 per 1 million plays. So, even Bloons makes a very tiiiiny portion of their total in-take from ads.
This is definitely something im interested in hearing.
I didn’t manage to get into university this year, so im counting on making a game with either unity or the udk, using that cash to study at a university overseas.
So knowing how much these unity devs making if theyre willing to share that info is helpful.
Step Seq had a weekly 3rd and monthly 2nd place. Those are $150 and $1000 respectively
And the big one was The Child Of Eden Music Game competition that was a win for $10,000
Apart from kongregate I’ve sold a source code license of step seq for £2650 (converts to $4123.40 today) and a non ex. license of drop for $1000
I suppose you want a grand total… $17861 and some change. Not bad. But over 2 years or so, that’s a pretty below average income. I had to go back to full time work as my outgoings are about 4 times that.
