Some of you may have received email notifications from Unity Discussions between July 7 and July 10. Since we normally keep email notifications switched off on this site, we want to explain what happened.
Our forum hosting provider, Discourse, introduced a change on their platform on July 7 that contained a bug. It accidentally re-enabled outgoing email on sites like ours that have it turned off. As a result, the platform sent a small number of notification emails (around 400 in total) before Discourse identified and fixed the issue on July 10.
A few things worth knowing:
- These emails were legitimate, sent by the real Unity Discussions platform. They were not phishing or a sign of any compromise.
- No account data was exposed. This was a configuration bug, not a security incident.
- No action is needed. Email notifications are disabled again and you should not receive further emails from the site.
If you received an email that looks suspicious or does not match this description, feel free to flag it in this thread and we will take a look.
Thanks for your patience, and apologies for any confusion this caused.
