I can't see the sky

Just starting out, created a floor and 1st person controller to look around
but when I go to play mode, I get no movement or perspective, and see only black
above my floor.

You need to add a skybox.

Component → Rendering → Skybox.

And add some lights:
Create → GameObject → Light
