Important Update: Sunsetting User-Generated Content (UGC)

Hello everyone,

We’re reaching out to inform you about an upcoming change to the User Generated Content (UGC) service. Since its launch in Open Beta in April 2023, UGC has provided creators with tools to manage and distribute user-generated content. However, we have made the decision to discontinue the service and will be shutting it down.

We will discontinue UGC as of March 12, 2025. UGC will officially be phased out on May 11, 2025.

Key Dates & Next Steps

  • Beginning March 12, 2025, no new sign ups or renewals for UGC will be available.
  • Existing users have until May 11, 2025 to access their UGC data and insight. After this date, UGC will no longer be accessible.
  • Data Access & Retention – You will retain access to your UGC data and content via API until the shutdown date. We encourage you to archive any necessary data before this time, as all UGC-related data and content will be permanently deleted, and the UGC pages and APIs will no longer be accessible.

How We’re Supporting You

  • Our team is available to assist with your transition and answer any questions.
  • We are providing FAQs to guide you through this change.

We appreciate your support and participation in the UGC beta and we sincerely thank you for being a part of this journey. If you have any questions or concerns, please submit a request through the Unity Gaming Services Support Forum.

Best Regards,
Unity

FAQs

Why is UGC being sunset?
After careful evaluation and consideration, we’ve concluded that it’s time to focus our efforts and resources on the product lines that we believe have the best potential to make our customers successful.

Can I still sign up for UGC?
No, UGC is no longer available for new signups.

What does this mean for current UGC users?
UGC stopped accepting new signups on March 12, 2025, and will fully shut down on May 11, 2025. Active customers have been given a 60-day notice to prepare for this transition.

What happens to my player data and content?
All UGC-related data and content will be permanently deleted by May 11, 2025, in compliance with legal and privacy obligations. Customers should retrieve and store any necessary data before May 11, 2025, as it will not be accessible afterward.

Lame, my game uses UGC and now I’ve got to port it to a new platform.
Really makes you think twice about using any unity service.

To avoid confusion, please update the announcement thread with a note that UGC has been discontinued.

The wording is confusing us. Can you please clarify what happens in the following case? I have a new player who starts playing after March 12. Can he still upload data and use UGC until May 11? Or will that player get some sort of error?
Thank you!

Hi, just to clarify, if you’re already using the service, it will continue to work until May 11. After that, the service will be shut down, and the endpoints will no longer function.

Hope that helps!

The Admin API and Client API reference have an “Invalid JSON pointer” issue.

Can you fix this so we can download all our UGC content using the APIs?

thanks for pointing this out. I’ve raised this to the team, will get back to you!

This should be resolved now, apologies and thanks for pointing it out! :slightly_smiling_face:

I’ve generated a token for a Service account with the “User Generated Content Admin” role.
Why do I get “Unauthorized” errors when calling the UGC Admin API with the Authorization header given to me? API Specifies (user_generated_content.admin.all) isn’t this role enough?

@KFIR_ONEHAMSA I recommend opening a support ticket for this, including more details regarding the endpoint you’re calling and how the request is formatted.

ARGH!!!
Are you all serious! i did not even have a chance to get to the point of using it! FFS Unity, figure out your target users!
a large majority of us are very small teams, or individuals. it takes us a couple years to adopt and integrate things! Stop pulling the rug out from under us!

yeah Unity isn’t playing nice right now. Support a service and not much later pull the plug. Makes you think twice about using services provided by Unity.
You would at least think Unity would make this open source so the devs can host it themselves if need be.

there is nothing to think twice actually, is straight obvious that is a complete lack of disrespect to launch a product for an year then when you don’t get the huge crowd you were expecting you stick it up to the people that actually trusted you and bought into the product.

And, unity, stop with the “sunsetting” double speak. You are cancelling/destroying a service that has one year of life not some way past their time system that no one use anymore.

Okay, if once in a life time i’d finally call something idiotic, fully rightfully, it would be this one.

Literally 2 years to die. The only thing that stops to stop using anything unity related is unity being free for nonprofit.

Just remember code monkey saying about this rather recently and now it’s dead, lol.
(It was called “mods” (x3) or something?)

2 months between the moment you announce deprecation and the moment you kill the service is absolutely crazy, I wish the best of luck to anyone who has to switch to an alternative last minute.
This is why so many devs refuse to use anything from Unity besides the engine, this is so unprofessional.

Can you at least keep the documentation online for a while? That would help with migration

@detzt The UGC service was officially shut down earlier this week, in line with the notice provided. Given that the service is no longer accessible, the associated documentation was also removed.

To make sure we fully understand your situation, could you share more about your need for retaining access to this documentation? This context will help us explore any potential solutions.

I am currently migrating a game that uses UGC to another service. Most of it is already done but for some methods I would like to look up what their exact behavior is. Right now I can only go by the name and the surrounding code when trying to replicate the same behavior in the new service.
Of course there is no need to develop something new with UGC, but there are still projects that have it in their code base. So it’s useful for the same reason as why the documentation from ancient Unity versions is still accessible.
