Insection - New Unity FPS WIP

Hey this looks great! I like the idea of fighting bugs for a change

A good old bug hunt.

Damn and the media section on the website is still under construction. Here is an imgur album http://imgur.com/a/izsb9#0
Glad you liked what you saw though.

Any chance we could (trouble)shoot a few NullReferenceExceptions?

Few more pix there. very nice. Looks like a mix of half-life and borderlands

I’m taking care of those, using my (c)#-shooting skills.

The ant-lions in Half Life 2 were great and generally HL and HL2 are games I personally enjoyed and HL actually put some of us into the game developer career path.

Borderlands was nice, but I wasn’t very satisfied with the experience and I never felt I could get back in at any time. Some of my friends moved on ahead, some stayed behind, jumping in always feels like I’m going to miss half the game.

I know it’s supposed to be hardcore, but it’s difficult to coordinate a group of adults with limited free time (family, jobs etc) so imagine finally getting together and I jump in only to find myself in a unfamiliar situation, with no context and my friend has a super-extreme hand crafted sniper shotgun with laser-sharks - not really setting up the mood for co-op, don’t you think?

Of course the seriousness level is closer to borderlands, but it’s more related to Starship troopers, Aliens and Stargate than Borderlands.

Was thinking more along the lines of graphical influence

I never played borderlands… didnt impress me quick enough. Borderlands 2 was pretty cool though.

Starship troopers is definitely one of my fav movies tho, and stargate is teh awes, so keen to see where this goes

Well we won’t be rendering cell shaded, though our characters won’t be 100% realistic, so yes I guess we do have some things in common. More like 80%-20% realistic-cartoon on the characters (exaggerated facial features and muscles - will be posting in-game models next week).

Pretty good. Bugs are cool.

A fresh shot.

I can only see the weapons picture, which is weird considering that I can usually see them. Instead of just adding them as attachments, what about putting them in-line?

Beautiful game, saw the creatures on your site.

Thanks. I added some images in line.

Very nice Koyima! Great character models to.

I see you on the unity forums often so I am more familiar with you. Its nice when you see users who are more active on these forums working on something because you just are more familiar with them. I dont know if you know what Im saying but its like theres a number of users who you see here often and then there is a lot of users who you see for a short period of time and then never see again. I can name quite a few users who I have become very familiar with on these forums your one of them. ha.

Sorry for the off topic-ness. To me it looks like a mix of borderlands and starhawk. The screenshots a very very nice and its not a zombie shooter. I think a lot of people have enough zombies for a while. So great job guys.

Have you ever played any of the Earth Defense force games? That would be cool if you also mix in some elements from that to, its kind of similar.

Keep up the great work, look forward to seeing more

@snowconesolid: yep, I know what you mean. I love the unity community, I found a lot of helpful posts when I had issues (I didn’t really have to post, a google search usually provided the answer here), so when i was more comfortable with the engine I started helping out and posting.

Earth Defense seems interesting, but we haven’t looked at it as far as Insection goes. I think the major differences from a brief look I got is that they have giant realistic insects, while we are using a more stylized approach to the insects. As far as gameplay we are a bit more pick up and play (I think they have leveling/class elements).

As for Borderlands (Bordelands 2) I can certainly see what you guys are saying, but I can assure you it’s after the fact, the characters and universe of the game where written two years ago… anyway I digress, the actual in-game models will feel like Insection: that’s is crazy, colorful and pretty unique. (Dante is the real deal guys.)

yeah I did the same thing to when I started using unity. Every question I had, It was already asked before and I usually found it on google which led to a post here or on unity answers.

Earth defense force actually is pretty arcade style gameplay. Its something you can get into fast. But yeah it does have some rpg type elements and it is a completely different type game than what you are going for but I thought it could be used for some good inspiration.

I really like the style you guys have going on in Insection. And the characters are very unique in my opinion. That cyborg type character that you posted on the first page that looks like a mix of terminator and iron man is awsome. And like you said, its colorful, but at the same time also badass. Its hard to create badass characters that are colorful like that guy/bot. usually you need to use like dark colors for a badass type haha. But this character is very colorful and remains awsome at the same time. Really good work.

Initially we had two ideas for the style of the game: action-fun-colorful and horror-dark. We have since been leaning towards a more uplifting universe, though we ‘reserve the right’ to go dark at certain places (especially the space station level).

As far as characters go we think that we have something solid internally and we are of course waiting for feedback when we show them in-game and when you actually play as them.

Here as some sneak peeks into development (short vids on vine):

Some fresh ones:

Let me know if they aren’t showing.

Here is an imgur album with the concept for the vehicles in the latest screenshots.

Cheers
