we are an indie team of 5, working on an FPS game and thought we should Introduce ourselves and show you some stuff from our upcoming project ‘INSECTION’.
We thought that we should not make another zombie game and preferred to bring in some kick-ass alien insects and bugs .
We set the game in a futuristic universe, a couple hundred years from now in which the mutated and intelligent alien insect species have pretty much gone out of control and you have to teach them some manners.
The game will be a 4-player co-op FPS that you will be able to play both locally and online, and will also support bots in case someone ditches out on you. A few more gameplay modes will be made available along with standard campaign, but that’s for another post.
Right now we are a few weeks away from our pre-alpha milestone, but we have some concept art and a few screenshots for you to check out.
We won’t be focusing on the RPG elements like Borderlands does. We aim to make an experience closer to L4D, which you can pick up and play, complete a mission with friends and enjoy the visceral action without the burden of developing a character and his load-out.
Also we don’t share aesthetics with Borderlands, but yes we’ve played it - we know what we like about it and what we don’t - as I think most people on this forum do. Thanks for the comments, we’ll have more info on gameplay soon.
Aww now that you mention that: fact is, I really do miss decent Zombie Survival games a la “Dawn of the Dead / Land of the Dead” way. It seems everybody wants to make them, but nobody actually does it. Funny thing is, I’ve had similar thoughts as well with what you describe in your project e.g. 4-player coop, or - if pure Singleplayer - with the ability to give NPCs commands (e.g. position them like it was possible in HalfLife 2 with the “Send/Recall Squad” command) etc.
Insects are nice too, and the screenshots look very professional, but it’s probably more difficult to get the animations going - and the audience/fanbase is likely to be smaller. Just saying, if you really like Zombies (and obviously your team considered it), I see a great potential here, looking at the visual quality. Don’t do something else, just because you think people will nag you for “yet another zombie game” - because there simply aren’t many good ones out there.
Oh, don’t worry we can always do a ‘zombie mode’ , we do have a bug that can take control of one of your crew members and “infected soldiers”, though we aren’t going to feature them heavily.
We really love the sci-fi genre, someone else can make the ‘zombie game to end all zombie games’ you are waiting for.
Awesome graphics.
I see that your weapons have a great amount of detail. I’m assuming you are using a normal-map here - when you create the high-res mesh, do you model all those small details into the model itself, or is it separate objects that you put together? I’ve always wondered how people manage to put so much detail into their models, even if it is normal-mapped or not. It must take years!
Anyway, this is looking really nice. I am looking forward to seeing some in-game footage.
Yep, normal mapping is utilized here. Well the technique used is a mixture of modeling on a unified surface with various elements being separate objects (just like in reality) as well as a technique that only produces results in conjunction with normal maps. You can read more about it here: http://insectiongame.com/blog/projection-modeling/
Basically the idea is this: the fastest way to produce the desired result is favored. there is no right or wrong way and if you cling on to purity too much you don’t get things done.
