Kongrgate.com Unity3d web player! Good place to start?

Does anyone here use that site for playing web player games? If so would you recommend the site?

I’ve spent quite some time on kongregate. Although, when I did I never played a Unity3d game due to my lack of webplayer. However, I feel like once Unity will be able to export to flash, sites like kongregate, armor games, newgrounds, ect. will be a much more viable option for a place to start. Provided the game you stick up there is not to big to download.

Aside from file size, lets just say I was able to make a polished game in 48 hours and uploaded it to the site. What type of games are most popular/profitable right now?

You should define your idea of profitable on Kongregate. Sorry to say it, but you aren’t going to get rich from that website. You won’t even get wealthy. If you are lucky, and I mean supremely lucky, you might be able to buy yourself a really good meal once a month. Yes, it is possible to make serious cash, the odds of you doing so, especially on a 48hr game is “slim to none” where most values of “slim” rapidly approach zero.

The impression I get is people usually stick to casual games. Games that are the opposite of deus ex, something you don’t invest so much time into. He did mention spending time using the site to play games yet he didn’t say what games are played the most.

On flash gaming portal’s you are considered to be doing well if you make $1 per thousand plays.

So a single copy of Dues Ex… assuming $30 of income would be the equivalent to 30,000 plays.

The problem isn’t what people play, but how to get them to play your game and then how to monetize that.

From what I understand, making money off of the number of plays is not the way you monetize a flash game. Contact the portal you wish to publish too directly with a nice email and a proposal for your game. If your game is good enough, they may give you a sponsorship which could be anywhere from $100 to $1000 and more.

Or you might also try http://www.flashgamelicense.com/. They don’t have a huge selection of unity games on there but there are a few.

And the portal gives you sponsorship based on how many views they expect you to get - so no.

So the same would apply to kongregate? I went to that site 6 months ago and looked up a web game with unity3d, and it had 300,000 views.

This is true. However, the number of views would dramatically increase with a sponsored piece due to the fact that they would feature it on the front page for a length of time. In a given day, a featured game could hit 50,000 to 100,000 plays. If it’s a solid game that people enjoy and rate highly then a few 100,000 is defiantly possible.

My overall point is if you have your heart set on using kongregate or any other web portal to make a decent amount of change, a sponsorship would be less risky than simply uploading it and hoping that someone will see it on the newly added page.

But even then the ability to be profitable is still a fantasy for most. 100k a day is merely ~$100… the same as selling 100 $1 IOS apps, or 3 $30 games.

Nothing wrong with Kongregate (I’m thinking of releasing a few experiments there), but baring micro-transactions [which are an entirely different ballgame] etc. JustinLloyd is completely right about redefining profitable.
