CLOSED THREAD GUYS.
I never liked kongregate anyways. I would never put my game on Kongregate. Only on Steam, itch.io, Desura, Indie Game Stand, or Humble. Those are some really indie friendly websites (maybe not steam so much haha) that you can put your game up and will allow you to generate more revenue than from Kongregate games.
The problem I have with Kongregate is it seems really geared towards free multiplayer titles, and the community can be somewhat hostile towards Unity works. Iāve noticed that the most popular games there have multiplayer, or are Flash, or both. Unity works seem downvoted as a matter of principle, unless theyāre multiplayer of course. I still put my games on there, but I expect nothing from it (and, have barely made anything, so my expectation seems fulfilled.)
Iāve heard similar complaints about Kongregate finding ways to keep all the ad revenueāand I also agree with what Asvarduil said about them not being a great site for Unity games.
If youāre looking for a nice site to host your webplayer game Iād highly recommend www.wooglie.com. They only host Unity games and they actually screen games before they put them up so itās easier to get exposure without other games constantly popping up. Theyāre also run by a Unity developer who I think posts on these forums sometimes. I havenāt made enough revenue to get a payout so I canāt speak in that regardābut all in all they seem like a great site.
Edit: Although come to think of it I donāt remember ever seeing any horror games on wooglie so Iām not sure if they allow themācould be worth a shot though.
It does seem like there is a bias against unity games there. There used to be a category called āunityā but it looks like they got rid of it. And the other problem is there is a chat in the right side ā while your playing so you can see text from little kids.
I dont really know how you are supposed to make any money off the web games unless you had a boat load of players 100k daily active users or something.
I agree. Since I dont yet have a pool of games or people that would give said games enough ad impressions, I think it is useful for deploying a crippled demo, in order to drive sales of a paid web or phone app. I cannot confirm with evidence of my own that this is the case though.
In 2014 Kongregate is still a thing?
Anyway, that is definitely shady what they did here.
I played your game and it isnāt so much a āscary gameā as it is a generic exploration game with a screamer dropped in the middle of it, which are against Kongregateās policy in terms of both links and uploaded content.
Got to agree with you there. It is not Kongregate who is in the wrong it is IamArcangel. You see there is, like Murgilod said, terms and conditions. Itās not fair to blame them when you are clearly in breach of their rules.
I canāt stress enough the importance of finding out first that the place you are planning to showcase your game does actually allow its genre. Donāt complain later when its booted off and revenues not paid because of your lapse in judgment.
Worst part of this scenario is that Kongregate are being accused of scamming which needless to say, not necessarily with Kongregate, can lead you down a road of legal trouble.
Well, They should delete games when it has 2 or 3 days not a week or 3
They donāt magically know the content of your game until somebody reports it for violating their TOS. This is your fault, not theirs.
Well, If you thinks so
I liked that!
Kongregate is a laboratory for testing your game (in most cases), nothing more.
Donāt expect to make money from there.
If your game somehow gets the attention of a few 1000 users over there, you will be sure to receive a few thousand complaints( joking but you will receive lots of complaints). Some of them will help you uncover some bugs.
Now if you are fancy super duper programmer, you probably do not need kongregate.
On the other hand if you are an amateur programmer like a lot of indies are, then kongregate is the prefect place to thrust your bug infested game on a lot of loud whiny brats who will be sure to tell you that your game sucks and hopefully help you out by pointing the bugs
lol I think you might have actually just convinced me to put some games on Kongregate, eventually.
Btw, I was looking at kongregateās Top games this month and otherwise. Unity Games are not doing badly at all, actually.
The āAdventure Capitalistā game over there is an interesting game actually. Its not even a 3d game. Nothing fancy. Had me hooked for about half an hour though. Seems to have been released just at the end of may and already 4 million plays. Not bad at all
I think thereās less of a bias on web portals against Unity games than there used to be. Kongregate was one of the best places to see this, where the combo of open platform + unity free lead to a load of not-good-enough-to-be-called-shovelware games appearing when they first started accepting Unity titles, and understandably, that did leave a bad taste in some peoples mouths.
Most of that seems to have passed now. The installation base is higher, the name Unity is more trusted, and there are some good games out there helping to heal the damage from the early days.
As for what gets upvoted, what doesnāt, ad revenue and web portals in general - well thatās a whole other kettle of fish and itās certainly not an easy environment to survive in.
Absolutely.
I remember, in the early days of Unity at Kongregate, some 12 year old had made a āgameā and posted it over there that consisted nothing more than one scene with a Unity terrain and a few trees in one corner and a first person controller.
Haha, I remember a few of those too, blank terrains and untextured default unity cubes. Pretty cringeworthy stuff
