List of app development tools - help a girl out

Hey guys, I’ve created a list of helpful app development tools for developers who are just getting started. I would love your opinion. Is there any useful tool you feel should be added to this list? Please share your thoughts and help me perfect it https://blog.appnext.com/2017/01/app-development-tools/

Thanks!

WOW she used to be an IDF Military girl, how cool is that?, not gonna lie but I swear every single Israeli woman I see (online) is so pretty and bad ass at the same time. What an awesome country Israel is, does the IDF actively seek out super models? or are all Israeli women naturally pretty? Let me just say that I am sorry you guys had to suffer with a US President who was hostile against Israel and who clearly do not understand what is really happening but hopefully that will soon change.

Ok now I have never helped anyone before (I live on a small tropical Island with few people so there is nobody to help) so here goes this is my first time!

You forgot to put the part where UE4 requires you to pay 5% only if you make a certain amount of money I think $50K USD and Unity requires you to buy the software for $1500 if you make $100K off your game.

You should also put in Game Maker its often considered a better engine for a pure 2D games than Unity

There is also cry engine and lumberyard both free AAA engine. And Cry Engine doesn’t have to bake lighting like UE4 so it works way faster when developing but apparently the UE4 lighting looks much better because of such a feature in the first place. Some people claim Cry Engine looks the best but honestly I always found UE3 and UE4 to be the best looking engine there is a unique look to Unreal Engine games that you don’t get anywhere else. From Bioshock to Paragon

Pyxel Edit is also a popular used tool for Pixel Art and a lot of people use Spriter Pro aswell.

Marmoset Hexels 2 is a great tool for developing art for Isometric games and Hexel art.

Also humble bundle site is a great way to often get huge discounts on most of these tools for example there was a 2 week sale on dev tool kit there for $7 which would normally cost 100 USD.

Greetings from Tobago.

Wow!!! so much great information! Thank you so much for taking the time to answer and give your feedback and suggestions! Can all the tools you mentioned be used for apps or are they mainly for general game development?

Thanks again

lol your Instagram you have a pic back when you were in the IDF, pretty cool really

I love Israel, always at the top of technological innovation always producing more Nobel prize in Physics than anybody else maybe one day I can visit who knows.

Yes all the tools I mentioned are used for game development only.

For app development they use Android Studio and Visual Studio etc.

Thanks. We have our problems but were a pretty good country after all. Hope you make it here one day just as I hope to visit Tobago

I noticed the blog link isn’t just about game design. How about app-creation tools such as Xamarin, Android Studio (based on the Jetbrains Intellij IDE) & Microsoft’s Visual Studio?

Also CryEngine should be in the list. It’s sad that they aren’t doing too well, but it is a beautiful engine that should be included.

Since communication software was shared by TonyLi, there’s Microsoft Teams, Google Hangouts and even good old Skype. Also Teamviewer is a very good way to help each other out remotely.

Also check out this list for great game design tools: List of useful Game designing tools - Industries - News & General Discussion - Unity Discussions

Really great advice! Will add it to my list tomorrow. Did you use any of these?

From what I wrote, I’ve used Android Studio (very briefly), Jetbrains Intellij IDE (very briefly, did a bit of Java before c#), Visual Studio (almost every day), Skype (almost every day), Hangouts (few times a year), Teamviewer (few times a year).

From the link:
GIMP, Blender (few days, gave up on it), Sketchup Warehouse (for models; never used Sketchup), OneDrive, Google Drive, Audacity.

Thanks!

+1 for Trello.
Also SmartGit is a great UI for using Git. Really easy to use and visual.
Jetbrains YouTrack is a great project managment/task tool.

Trello was also just acquired by Atlassian which makes JIRA, another great tool for development. Also, not to derail, but looking at the post title and then the OP’s photo I thought OP was going to be a 42 yr old man from Florida looking to get eager helpers.

Hey James,
I actually use Trello myself. Haha not a 42 year old man just yet
If anything I grew up in Jersey… Now in Israel.

Thanks for taking the time to answer. :sunglasses:

Yeah I went to see if you existed elsewhere on the internet and you surely do. Sorry about that (you just don’t look like the average developer). Another tool I use with Trello is a web app called Timely. It’s free and let’s you log time worked on tasks or projects. I’ve used it on a ton of freelance work and to track my own time spent doing certain things like animating or modeling.
