I’m looking at changing my monitor setup to something a bit more juicy.
Having gone from 27” iMac with 21601440 res to a single 23” 19201080 I’m finding it a pain.
Just simple things like watching a tutorial while following along in unity or having two unity sessions on is painful.
i was wondering what other unity users have as their monitor setup and do how you feel it helps productivity.
I’m currently working with a pair of 25-inch 2560 by 1440 monitors. I’m definitely seeing an improvement thanks to no longer having to juggle multiple windows (Unity, Visual Studio, Chrome). Only drawback currently is that the desk I’m working on is just barely wide enough to hold both of them. If it were wider I’d be seriously tempted to buy a third.
I love multiple monitors. I currently run 3 identical 27" monitors on my workstation PC. I usually run Visual Studio on the left monitor, Unity editor in the middle monitor, and then the profiler (and browser tabs) in the right monitor. It is a massive productivity advantage compared to trying to juggle everything on one monitor.
I have 3 monitors right now.
1280x1024 left, 1920x1080 middle, and 1080x1920 right. Also they’re all different sizes.
There’s no point in using 4k, because I will have hard time dealing with tiny font. FullHD is enough.
Going from 1 to 2 displays is the most productive, benefit from adding 3rd display is minimal. (You can put a huge text into it, I suppose)
Typically I spread software I’m using over two or three displays, but can place music player or helper text onto monitor they do not cover. In case of unity, left monitor usually hosts profiler, project hierarchy, scene hierarchy, and if I’m debugging sometimes I drag the scene view there as well.
Middle monitor is for code editor, inspector, game view, and scene view when I’m not debugging it.
In case of software like visual studio, it is often a good idea to drag out either “output” or “comple errors” to the right monitor.
Also in case of multiple monitor you can send a window to left/right screen via hotkey, which helps.
Past 5 years at home I got 2x 24’'.
Super productivity increase.
If desk is small, an alternative, is to rotate screen vertically. Good for long script / document texts.
I wouldn’t mind having 3rd. But I don’t feel as necessity.
However, It could potentially help me in certain projects.
Colors calibrations between screens may be required in certain cases.
Also another matter is, weather screens are mat, or glossy. I got both glossy.
And what type environment working in of course. You don’t want reflections.
I have an LG ultra-wide, 3440x1440.
I used to have 2 monitors, but prefer having a widescreen, so I can focus on one thing when I need to, and easily have two HD windows side by side if I want.
