New member, just saying hi and thank you :)

Heya,

I just registered a forum account and thought I’d make a “hello!” post to introduce myself briefly. I also wanted to say a huge thanks to whom ever is responsable for the tutorials on the Unity site and to all the users who post tutorials on youtube. I have been looking around for an engine for a while now and have tried many open-source options. However I discovered what makes open-source great is also one of its drawbacks. I spent a few weeks per engine, trying to get the engine up and running properly and many of them rquired so much tinkering that I found myself working on the engine more than my actual game developement!

I am very happy to have stumbled across the Unity Engine as in three days I have completed the Platformer tutorial without any serious problems. It’s up and running and looks amazing.

I have a quick question about licenses however, is there a difference between an Indie license and the free Unity download? I have seen the term ‘Indie license’ used on the forums but cannot seem to find any information on it.

Thanks a bunch
Mechanist

Welcome to the Unity Community! The “Indie” license no longer exists. It has turned into Unity free. Unity Indie was the same as Unity free is today, but it cost $200. They have the same license and the same restrictions. (e.g. You must have the Unity watermark before the game begins, etc.) You may release commercial work with the free license without paying royalties or anything of the sort. Nowadays when people on here say Unity Indie, they mean Unity free.
