New to this community and would like to know who I am interacting with on here!

Hi guys! New here to Unity and making games as I’ve decided to chase my dream as a game developer. And since I’ve officially spent my first day here and completed my first tutorial I would like to know more about the people who are also on here to ave a better understanding of the game development community! Questions such as:
What are your goals in game development?
What games do you play?
Are you more into the designer aspect of gaming or playing them yourself?
What is your preferred platform?
What are your favorite games?
Any information/feedback helps me understand the community better as I plan to be as dedicated to my future in game development as I can, and to also know yours could help motivate/give me more information on whether you guys are also on here as a hobbyist, or are looking for a career in it. Cheers!

Welcome! The amount of unity users is well into the millions - so your only gonna scratch the surface of what everyone’s like here. Anyway, my goals in game dev are to beat bungie to world domination, and own and operate my own studio one day. I play all kinds of games and have since the atari days. Some favorites would be the GTA series, the halo series, half life, cortex command, rush (n64), or mobile titles like Hill Climb Racing, plague inc, air control. These days I’m more into making games than playing them, but still try to play in my spare time. I have stuck with android as my development platform, for ease of access and, well, it’s cheap to get your foot in the door.

I wish you luck, and with determination and research - I’m sure you can become more than just a hobbyist!

I’m a hobbyist. My goal is to release a MMO game with a fully functioning ecology and resource based economy. And it should be more fun then life itself too.

Welcome to the community!

  • My goal of game development is to finish my project and most importantly learn something new from it.
  • Playing games allows you to get some inspiration or pay attention to small details. Playing games too much would leave you no time for your own project.
  • So far I made one game for mobile and another one is coming up (same platform). It’s quite hard because you need to manage resources as efficiently as possible while making game playable and fun on mobile devices. In the future I am planning to make a game on another platform.

Advice I can offer you is it research before making a thread.
And also, don’t start Engine War thread. Mods hate them :stuck_out_tongue:

Thanks! I too would like to own and operate my own studio, but for now I’m just scratching the surface like you said, and there is A LOT of stuff to learn in programming, all I hope to really do is land a job programming/designing video games. But I think because I’m relatively young(16) if I keep working I can get there, nice to know others have big ambitions with game design around here!

Haha thanks, I am new so I’m kind of putting my foot in the water of the community creating nooby threads, but they helped me solve frustration and in the future I know what to look for.

Welcome to the community. It’s a big world of four million developers. The frequent posters include a mix of hobby-ests, young-developers, and industry veterans alike. I’m in the later category with eleven years in the industry, four of which I was also an Indy. If I may be so bold, I’d like to welcome you by sharing one piece of advice: FINISH small projects. Your mileage may vary.
