I was wondering what I should do for the survival game as I have always had an interest in the survival game genre with PvP and stuff. I think Zombies are being overused but they seem to always be the most successful so I am sort of stumped here. I also am thinking of camera view. I find that eagle eye / top down would be cool as it hasn’t been done but there are many cons to that along with it or just go with the traditional first/third person view. Thank you very much foreveryone’s input!
Well… To be honest, I bought infestation ( WarZ ) once and never had any interest for the other zombie survival games. When I heard about ARK : survival evolved I wanted it quite badly. Mostly because of the survival with dinosaurs. Just an Idea thought but if I were you, I’d choose an unique theme for the game. And also, there are inumerous top down zombie shooting games so if you are going with that, make it as unique as possible
Thank you very much for your input, much appreciated! Ya I will try to come up with a unique idea. The topdown game would be completely multiplayer where I will allow people to host their own server and play with friends + more. It will feature full PvP + PvE aspects, I also want to implement crafting + more such as building your own unique house then protecting it from raiders and more. I might make a poll later and let people vote for what camera view they think would fit better for this multiplayer survival game.
Well some games that are inspiring me to create this game are, Unturned, Rust, H1Z1, Ark, and Grav. All of them share the experience of intense PvP combat where you lose all your items when you die which makes up the fun of surviving. Unturned has an interesting graphics style, I want to aim for a cartoony graphics style. I like Grav and Ark for the uniqueness with the enemies and the feel of realism and I like H1Z1 for its PvP action.
Also forgot Albion Online which is what inspired me to think about the top down view for the game but that game is and mmorpg which features some survival aspects.
So it’s less about exploring or building for its own sake, and more about confrontations with other players?
So presumably players might still explore to find good places to hide, ambush others, find resources, and build things, but that would all be to support their PvP experience.
What’s the reason for the cartoony graphics style? (I’d ask the same thing about any style. I don’t have anything at all against cartoony.)
Are you thinking more of a first-person, in-your-face, you’re-there experience like a shooter, or something more removed like MMORPGs where you can plan your strategy with a broader perspective?
That is true but I aim to also include those features into the game as big aspects but it won’t be my largest priorities. I will add a building system like Unturned where you gather materials and create base plate then a wall and more. Exploring will also be a part as the environment will be filled with many different land marks + more.
The reason I’m using cartoon graphics is because of my skill in 3d modelling and at the same time I will be using the Toon Character Pack from the asset store as those characters look good for a survival game as they can be easily customized and are already well made and optimized. It will also be a unique type of survival game as many cartoon style multiplayer survivals don’t exist on the market.
I am looking to go in between where the users decide what they want to do. If they want to create an attack plan they can or if they just want to barge into the enemy base they can go ahead and do so.
Sounds good! To me, toons suggest frantic, over-the-top cartoon violence – either fast-paced third person camera like Sonic or a wider RTS-style view where you can see all the nearby toons acting crazy.
So what do you think of the following features in my survival game?
Graphics: Toon (Sort Of Like Unturned) Multiplayer: Yes Type: Survival Enemies: Not decided upon yet Features: Building, Crafting, Exploration, Extensive PvP, and more later.
Looks like a good list to me. I like that you’ve identified your core gameplay: PvP. It gives you a focus to design your other features around (building, crafting, etc.).
Since, like me, 3D modeling isn’t your strongest area, the type of enemies might depend on what you can find on the Asset Store to match the look of Toon Character Pack.
Thank you very much for all your input, you have helped a lot. A guy on my other post in the general discussion thread posted that the enemies could be Ghosts as they have not been used yet. Seems interesting but I don’t know if it would be found fun. Might give it a try.
A little more to support the idea with the Ghosts, the Ghosts can go through walls + more which makes it a little more unexpected and challenging but I don’t know how the idea would work. The whole idea seems weird but it seems like it would be really cool at the same time.
Alright I will give it a try. If it doesn’t work out I can easily change / remove the ghosts as it is only one component of the game. Thank you very much for your useful input!
Thank you very much , I will post more updates as the game progresses. I am currently working on other types of equips (hat, shirt, pants) and animations for the third person (Holding the gun, shooting).
