Hia all,
I am a 16 years old italian student; i used to play a lot of videogames, last one, where i spent more than 2.5 years on, world of warcraft, bored me.
I am currently bored of videogames…
Some days ago while surfing on the net i saw an article 'bout unity, and I was immediately interested.
I had no experience in modelling, and just a tiny bit on scripting, but I wanted to give this a try.
I started with the 2 tutorials, gui and the scripting one, and I tried to read every single line in the scripts and write them down and try to understand them: it worked.
Now I started another tutorial, the Lerpz third person platform one, but i feel a bit lost: first of all, it doesn’t explain the scripts that you use, and while trying to understand them, I had hard times…
Do you guys have some suggestions?
I am feeling a bit lost…
The platformer tutorial teaches you good stuff, but doesn’t teach much about scripting aside from giving you scripts to read through and make sense of yourself. I’d suggest reading through it after the first person shooter tutorial and doing a small game or two of your own.
Don’t worry if you don’t understand the scripts in the platformer tutorial, you aren’t supposed to. The point of the tutorial is about setting up the game and the methods that are used. There are a lot of comments in the scripts themselves but thats not enough to explain it to a non-programmer.
You can try the first person tutorial like some others mentioned and look up things that confuse you in the documentation that swine linked to.
Learning programming and game design is hard, but possible and just takes a lot of time. Keep trying, be patient and I’m sure you will do fine.
As far as “looking forward to joining us”, I say you just did, congradulations! Around here everyone from professionals to complete newbies are welcome.
PS I’m 16 too, and there are a lot of young people on this board… You aren’t the only one
