Steam game publisher question

Hi, I got a game already greenlit under by steam account. I am wondering if I found a publisher to publish my game, can i transfer my game to the publisher’s account?

Might be better to ask on the Steam forums.

There are Steam forums!!! That’s crazy I’ve never seen any mention of that. Makes perfect sense and I will join asap but wow… not sure how I’ve not come across any mention of it before. Thanks man!

Pro tip: There are everything forums. :stuck_out_tongue:

Ha ha. I suppose so. I still find it odd in all of the Steam discussions here I have never seen anyone reference the forums like “there is a good example over here on the Steam forum see what they are saying about Indie games” or whatever. Kind of odd.

Oh you mean those Steam discussions for like Q&A on Steam itself or the game discussions like people can post questions / feedback? Yeah I have seen those. But not actual forums like here or what GameJolt has. I was thinking you meant they had actual real forums. That would be awesome.

GameJolt has actual forums like General, Gaming, Development, Creative etc with a few channels in each of those. A great place to connect with other gamers and get dev feedback.

Steam has developer forums once you have signed up to release a game.

Steam’s forums don’t exactly have the best reputation for a community (at least with regards to the sections that are intended for customers. Developer sections may be different). Very few communities come close to Unity’s.

The steam developer group is giving me error, I can’t join. I am thinking of finding answers here from any developers that have these kind of experience.

Yeh steam is - a pain.

Even worse when - right now, asset flipping is common:

So, I’m guessing you’ve already set-up your ‘steam partners’ page? And you want to give your game to a publisher… Why? Are you sure this ‘publisher’ is worth it & not someone just trying to on sell your game for a percentage? You can trust them yeh?

But to basically answer your question - yes you can transfer your games to another partners / workshop account. But that’s about as much as I know right now. I’m not sure if it’s indefinite or final, or if you can move them back to your account at a later date.

However, from the asset flip controversy, no rules stating you can’t re-upload your own game, multiple times. Not yet anyway.

Nobody cares about asset flipping. It is a complete non-issue.

If your publisher is worth their salt then they should have a process for this. Worst case they pay the Steam Direct fee and it’s a non-issue, right?

I think you will need to rerun the tax registration process etc since it will be a new company. That was a pain, the USA tax authorities is actually even worse than the ones here in the EU… who knew!

What are you people going by that keep saying this? Clearly based on YT videos as well as numerous comments on Steam (including in the discussion linked above) there are people who do care and care a lot. So much in fact to say “I won’t buy any game that uses assets from a store and I will tell all of my friends not to as well”.

And that is for just using non-original assets in an otherwise original game. True asset flips of taking game templates and selling them basically as is a heck of a lot more people care about that and do not like it.

Granted it might not be all people or even the majority of people but to say “nobody cares” is absolutely wrong. I don’t personally agree with their logic but that doesn’t change the fact that some people hate it and see it as a sign of lack of skill and / laziness.

I think it is perfectly fine to buy things from the asset store that “complement” your game. For example, I am using a few assets, but they are mainly things like shaders or whatnot that can easily be integrated into my game without anyone knowing.

When it comes to building a game using art assets, I think that is where I draw the line. I don’t know why anyone would want to see a game built from generic art assets from a store that other people can easily use.

Personal commissions from an artist would be fine since they will at least be unique.

I think that art assets from the store should be reserved for hobby projects or examples for learning.

Well that’s what I am saying… there are many people right here on these forums who view it this way (based on other posts in other threads over time). So to say nobody cares makes no sense.

One thing that is interesting about it is it seems like whenever I see this view it comes from an artist or at least a game dev. In the Steam discussion linked by someone above the person talking about not wanting to play games that use art assets from a store mentions doing some game dev at one time and finding it wasn’t for them… lacked the skills or something I don’t recall the exact details now. So it could be this view is mainly coming from game devs themselves most of the time. Of course, with all of the current game devs and people who have tried their hand at game dev and stopped this can be a huge amount of people. Although certainly not all of them feel this way.

Yes you can move your game. Contact Steam and have them move it. I had to do that when my corporation broke up right before I launched a game and had to quickly create a new LLC for myself. (That’s a story in itself, I basically got pushed out because I “wasn’t producing anything” even though I basically single handedly created and released a title on Steam, got assets up on the Unity Asset Store, etc, and nearly a year later I can see my old partners never were able to get even their website done, let alone release any products lol, losers)

They moved my game over without issue basically.

Should be even easier now that there is no greenlight process to go through.

Im sorry. This wasn’t really relevant to the thread just a off the cuff rant from reading comments. I dont expect anyone to care what my random thoughts are now that I think about it but for entertainment value I left it included in the spoiler.

inappropriate asset flip rant I say this from a players perspective since I’m new enough at this I dont have a great deal of anything else. The asset flipping horror show has blown things out of proportion and people are severely over critical of reusing art. It’s to the point that even people with a fair amount of sense otherwise think its a sin to put any art thats already in a game in theirs. Its seems like everyone thinks the majority of players care when I dont think most even notice when its done correctly. Why in the world would I make another model of a wineglass when there are hundreds already made and ready. I do think a near exact replica of another full game is wrong. I also think buying a pile of mismatched assets and sticking em together in a hodgepodge of cobbled together mess is wrong. Yes most of your art should be original if you want your game to be original but I see nothing wrong with the proper use of preexisting models. So you go make a hundred bookcase models and I make a hundred and chances are 2 of em are close enough to identical to warrant a Jim Sterling video. If I use a candlestick from the asset store that dosent look out of place in the world I built will anyone care or even notice? Is it not possible to use some premade parts and have a complete original whole? Dont get me wrong just slapping together a zero effort pure and obvious asset flip is wrong in almost everyones eyes and will get noticed but there are sensible ways of helping your productivity with generic models. As a player I can’t tell you if that crate in the corner of that one level in Call of duty was the same as the one I saw in Fallout. The reason for that is because I barely even noticed it in the first place so what does it matter if its the same. For that matter there are alot of real world objects already available that would all look very similar to each other. It’s lame but the first thing that comes to mind is an orange. Say I need a model of an orange and find 300 already available. If I then made number 301 so I could be pure and original would it be noticeably different than each one of the others? What I’m getting at is I think people should use a bit of common sense when choosing to use premade art but not feel like its going to make them an evil lazy Jimquisition target if they use a rock that someone has seen before.

I see no harm in using assets of generic models that would be nearly identical (cups, plates, shelves,etc.).

Of course, I would still make them myself so I have full control over them if I feel like I want to customize them a bit (i.e. make them battered or worn).

I think the issue comes into play when you start using assets for the important objects in the scene that should be contributing the to the game’s art style.

Character design, environment design (yes, even small rocks), and that sort of thing all add up to make a game look unique.

Now, if you can find assets that fit your game’s style and blend in perfectly, then it should be no problem. As long as it all works together and nothing stands out and looks like someone else made this one thing, then it’s okay. (of course, that can even be an issue when using multiple artists on the same team).

I’m not sure how asset flips became the new favorite topic that threads turn round into. However…

I personally don’t really disagree with what you’re saying here. However, it could be argued that the main focus of a game should be gameplay, and thus reusing art is okay if it lets you focus on gameplay more.

Again, this isn’t my view (I care a lot about presentation), but one might argue it.

Its a side effect of mentioning Steam in the presence of people who spend too much time on YouTube.
