I am talking about a complete Virtual Experience - VR compatible(of course), Advanced AI (That you can actually talk with), Feeling System (Where you can feel mostly any game object and can even feel the breeze, etc. etc.
It’s a long list of features, but is it possible to make this?
Talking more - Let’s also include a huge map - very, very huge - Maybe the size of the earth, or solar system, or even the universe.
Huge maps are usually possible when they’re boringly procedurally generated.
Thinking about it, you COULD employ bunch of humans to drive in-game characters (actors of sorts), but senses are still a no. Decent touch can’t be done, Vestibular sense requires expensive machinery and something like smell requires a truckload of chemicals. So, nope.
With those kind of requirements the best idea is to walk outside.
The problem is that by the time you finished, or even got to a playable tech demo, humans will have evolved to be floating amorphous blobs of energy and will no longer resemble humans as they are today. The planet will have died due to global climate change and civilization will be spread among the stars. AI will be so advanced that our modern understanding of AI will seem unfit for even a child’s toy.
So all of your systems will be outdated and archaic, and people will ignore it to instead telepathically post on hyper-forums about the possibility of creating a game that simulates current life accurately and thoroughly…
I thought I was an absolute expert at life withdrawal and ho-humness. You, @Kiwasi , have show me that no matter how good you think you are at something, there is always someone who has surpassed you to the next level!

On one side of me right now is the central Australia dessert region. You could simulate that with a repeating 1km patches of terrain with no one being the wiser. On the other side is the pacific ocean. To the casual observer one wave is pretty much identical to the next.
There is an interesting patch of human activity between the two, which would be expensive to simulate. But that’s about it. And if you dropped your simulation back about 500 years, even that would go away.
What I’m planning with my own game is a bit similar to what you have in mind, but a much less in scope.
The biggest problem in my plan that I haven’t yet been able to solve was that, the real life is not really interesting for most people as it is, because they usually play video games just to escape from the boredom of living their life.
So, if you are going to sell another real life experiences to them, it better be at least something much better than they already have.
And needless to say, trying to cover that many aspects of real life would cost a lot more development time and resources.
So, I guess that a better question to ask could be what kind of new gameplay experience might justify such an investment, and more importantly, whether or not you can afford it.
As for this kind of project, I think it’s possible. We have AI made by Microsoft & Apple whom you can talk to (Alright, they suck, but we have them). I don’t know how the devs will face the feeling system problem, and this makes this kind of project “impossible”.
Anyways, a project like this will take years - or maybe centuries to be completed. So, it’s a tough choice.
According to Elon Musk its likely the project already happened and we are living in a simulation. Probably multiple simulations deep.
I personally don’t believe him*. But he does present a compelling set of arguments that are worth considering.
His argument hinges on the fact that it is possible for us to simulate this universe from within this universe. Basically that we will eventually reach a tech level where we can produce lossless simulations. However based on my engineering training, I doubt such I thing can be done.
I’ve actually wondered once how much would it cost for someone like Blizzard to hire actors to control at least some npcs in the game. You know, theme park/disneyland style. Might require a different game structure, though.
Its certainly not impossible, at least on a smaller scale. We frequently have NPCs that run live in our LARP games. Structured right, it could work for video games too.
In my opinion a game like that’s biggest issue is that it would clearly be pay to win and gold farmers would wreck the economy and ruin the experience for everyone else.
If we are going to go down this path, its worth noting that there are a bunch of other mods that mitigate perma death in various ways. Whats uncertain is if any of them work.
