Theres no good tutorials out there.

You can’t find tutorials teaching you how to make a game from start to finish. The tutorials are incomplete. They don’t explain what they’re doing they just show you. And I don’t think your ever really learning anything. Sure if you do complete them you have a project to work with. But its never a fully functional game anyways. So theres no point.

There is no such tutorial that teaches you how to create a game from zero to master.

A game is a multimedial thing. You need to master several aspects to create a game. And every aspect fills libraries and tons of tutorials. You can study art for several semesters. And design for several semesters. And programming for several semesters. And music for several semesters. And storywriting for several semesters. You can spend the rest of your life with studying the aspects.

So why do you expect to find every relevant information in a few tutorials?

And why do you expect to know how to make a perfect game from doing a tutorial? For doing the perfect game you need practice. Practice is the key.

A tutorial is no wishing well, the main work remains at your side. The tutorial usually shows you just a few techniques and gives you a few thoughts to play with. Stuff that helps you on your way.

So it would be impossible for someone to make a tutorial showing a game being made from start to finish? I don’t think so.

You can make a tutorial that shows you how to make a game from start to finish, no question. But there is simply no such tutorial that teaches you all the needed knowledge at once. They all remain incomplete. Because it is technically impossible to teach the knowledge and experience of several years in a few minutes of a tutorial.

Nothing to do with a sucking internet.

It is not “technically impossible” to teach you everything. I believe in order to be a successful game developer you need to know how to do everything. And I truly do believe that a video tutorial showing you how to make a game from start to finish would be the easiest way to teach you everything.

The biggest problem with game development is that it incorporates many different fields. There’s programming and then there’s the art (which also branches into a lot of different fields of art, of which more than one is usually used in games), there’s sound (effects and music), game design, story writing, dialogue etc.

So to show a person how to make a game in Unity, the tutorials are focusing on Unity itself. And often if a complete game is being made in Unity it will be something small. Because tutorials show you how the parts work, it’s up to you to study those parts and make a game.

If someone asked me to help someone make a game on their own I would the following:

  1. Tell them to pick a programming language (C#) and study it and become proficient in it. Write small Windows programs. Make Windows Phone apps. Get the experience and the feel for the language.
  2. Then and only then if you are going to make a 3D game and you want to create your own models you need to pick a 3D Modeller (Blender) and get proficient in that. Learn 3D theory. Understand the basic concepts.
  3. Then learn the tool that you will be using to make the game (Unity). Understand its parts. For instance at Udemy there are tutorials that take you from start to finish on very small games. If you have an understanding of the previous two points then you can go through the manual of Unity plus the tutorials out there and make a game.

I have to agree with Tiles on this one. Single tutorials can’t touch on everything. They do give you a better understanding though and then only by playing with the tools will you find parts that you don’t understand and then you can go find out that parts. Practice makes perfect.

Tutorials would be more effective if they were designed to be completed in order to get a finished product. Ultimately you would want a sequence of videos. They would teach you how to do everything. You could watch the videos as many times as you want. You would always start from the same point of nothing and end up with a finished game.

There are no tutorial series out there like that. I don’t understand why. Everyone keeps saying that its impossible. How is it at all “impossible” for a tutorial series to teach you how to make a game from start to finish?

Eteeski has started a turorial series wich will teach you how to make a complete game(including programming, modelling, sounds…)

Nice. I subscribed.

bugk2369, it also looks like some of the courses at Udemy have complete small games.

ETeeski is crap. He didn’t even bother to make a playlist for his tutorial series.

Maybe once you know Unity well you can create a set of tutorials that will be able to help other people like the way you want to be helped.

So you want to learn making a game, but you are too lazy to press the next video every 30 mins?

Not even what I was asking about. Just a regular old stinking tutorial.

Have you looked at some of his playlists?
https://www.youtube.com/user/ETeeskiTutorials/playlists

There’s a playlist where he makes a shoot-em-up. That’s a complete game. His Ultimate Game Dev tutorials also looks good.

I’m not sure what you mean by his tutorials doesn’t seem to be demonstrating how to make a game.

And by the way, most tutorials try to show you how to programm some stuff, so after the tutorial, with the knowledge you got, you can finish the game as you wish. But its true that there isnt a finished game tutorial YET.
Edit: there are multiple tutorials wich have been completed, but they are just small projects(but they are still very helpful)

Ok no matter what anyone says or points him in the direction. We are all wrong. Simple.
You may think it’s crap but others like the videos that do simple straightforward games. Plenty of them out there that do start to finish. They are simple for a reason. It is then up to you to make it stand out and be an awesome game.
But since nothing can satisfy you, go to school, get a degree, and learn the business. Then come back on the 15 to 20 years when your experienced and show us all how it’s done. Otherwise you are here asking a question, not liking the answers and then complaining about it.

I’m not looking for just unity tutorials. I’m looking for a tutorial that teaches you how to do everything. And I want all the tutorials to be written to get a finished product. And that means a game from start to finish.

Did you look at the Udemy courses or the Lynda ones or maybe Pluralsight? Have you considered buying a book?

There is 3d buzz. They did a complete 2d shooter game. But it is simple game. Nothing flashy. My kid followed it.
Then how about you explain what it is you are looking for. From start to finish means planning, sketches, ideas, modeling, prototyping, a lot of coding- more modeling. More prototyping. More adjustments. Etc etc.
no one will hold your hand here. Time to grow up and play with the big people that are doing their research, going to school, picking up books (ya the things with written words in it) doing the grind. Spending the hours and hours getting things done.
Even unity has their learning section.
But so far you aren’t listening nor understanding. That attitude will not get you anywhere.
