Every single time there is a new post that a new beta version is available the beta link to the release notes does not yet work (not found / 404). I guess the website needs longer to update than the files archive. Could you please delay posting this until all included links actually work? Otherwise this is always a waste of time.
You do know Unity is a global company right? Those posting release notes and the web masters are probably not in the same time zone. So you want to waste Unity’s time so it doesn’t waste your time?
Doesn’t sound like a fair tradeoff.
I mean, that’s what Unity’s purpose is, to spend time making tools so that we spend less time making our games…
@ImpossibleRobert This has been brought up many times, it has also been suggested if they can’t update the site to have a txt file with the release. The bottom line is that when a company gets at this size, basic coordination for things like that is impossible. (link to the last time this was brought up: https://discussions.unity.com/t/921358/7 )
From all issues that Unity has this is probably not something many will pay attention to. It is an indicator though in my opinion: You somehow got to an organizational structure where a seemingly trivial thing like getting a file and the accompanying release notes out at the same time suddenly becomes an issue (this time the delay was nearly a full day, it should be 1 minute max with an automated release process).
I’d assume (and purely guessing here) this is not a single case we just randomly identified, but just one example of many. Maybe this is comparable to the “broken windows syndrom”. If we stop pointing out such things we start to accept them all over. I come from a background where the mindset is “quality is in the details”. The more of such places there are where things just are as they are and even the users start to defend this, issues will only become bigger, not smaller in my personal view.
Why would you delay something just to wait for some web caches to invalidate? You can wait for them yourself, other people will start to play with the new build in the mean time regardless. It has nothing to do with organization.
Nobody is supposed to wait for anything. Unity should simply use a good process to upload new releases. I cannot name any other company right now that does not manage to release files and release notes in parallel. Web caches can be cleared programmatically. It’s simply a matter of automation and… organization.
I agree that they shouldn’t hold back releases, but also, I haven’t seen this issue outside of Unity. All other software I use come with the release notes within the software, or they have a link to their website that works (even if it’s just a txt).
Unity now has an official API to get information about all Unity releases. The API also provides the release notes as markdown and there’s no delay, they’re available as the release goes live.
From my experience, the delay between the release and the release notes being published on Unity’s website is not fixed, sometimes they’re available shortly after the release, sometimes it takes hours for them to be published.
This indicates there’s a manual process involved. Either the release notes are only published after an editorial check or the website needs to be updated manually. Either way, I also think it’s a bit annoying and looking unprofessional to land on a 404 page, even if it’s not the most pressing issue.
My experience is that the website updates at midnight the next day after release is available to download on the Hub.
That is, midnight on some North American timezone. So outside of rare exceptions, I always have access to the release notes on the morning following the Hub release.
Technically they do say the notes will be available “soon” and outside of Alpha/Beta forums, where the link is posted, no one has access to the page. And for non-Alpha/Beta releases, there’s no link posted so there’s no 404.
Quite a nothingburger.
No but there have been quite a few times when starting unity its said theres a new version but you go to the website and it says not, or hub cant find it either, and its like why is there more than 1 place which tells it which versions are available? For betas i kinda dont mind, but for lets call them live releases? it doesnt help a company shine
Don’t want to step on anyone’s toes here but this thread is for people who do not like the current situation and want to try to suggest meaningful improvements. If you are fine with how it is, this might simply not be the thread for you.
This issue is extremely annoying Not only beta, but also 2023.1.x or other version release notes are delayed one or more days.
I can’t find the issue like this for other production tools like Visual Studio. If Visual Studio Installer notify to me for new version, its release note is available that time. There is no delay.
