Unity 3 Pro and free unity, feature comparison!

Well, Had to share it!
See here:

So Umbra and Beast are not in free unity, I have only one word to say ****(I written the stars!).

So, Will we get Deferred Rendering in free unity? I think this would be the only thing to add more.

So, What do you think?

the features known so far are only part of whats coming in 3.0 from what mentioned (the things they can / want to talk about at the time) so I wouldn’t break the head too much right now, the comparision table will happen soon enough to get a detailed picture of it.

also the important things are none of these, the important things to serious devs are the debugger, the upgrade of mono and the upgrade of physx which are likely to happen for the free and pro side. same goes for the asset filter capability in the editor I guess.

And I hope you didn’t really expect $110k / title middleware technology to be available in a $0 technology, cause that would be () (BNF)

I’d love to see a side by side comparison when it comes out.
It’s natural that UT will publicize the big headline deals that make Pro stand out - Pro is where they make the money.

But they have a free version for good reason and a vested interest in making it good. They also have a track record of doing so. I have no doubt there will be great new features in the free version, quite probably some trickle down from the current pro version

Remember, you can do light mapping and (your own) occlusion culling in free right now. But if you want ready made, integrated, high end high cost solutions ready to go, you have to pay for that.

I didn’t, I just want the other features to be there, The upgrades are critical to both free and pro. Deferred Rendering too.

Let’s just see.

Those features are PRO features, you can do a small project/indie without needing of those features, so i think it is fine to left out of the indie version.

I’m unsure if the deferred rendering is pro only actually, would guess its both.
The debugger is something I take for granted to be available in any version too for example.

Its just a first “feature preview”. For beast / umbra we only know that they are pro cause the press release contained that informations.

though what I take as granted is that the current renderer will be available with dynamic shadows on both so even if the free one shouldn’t get the deferred renderer, I’m confident that you will get dynamic shadows.

Also I expect render textures and movie textures to be available in both

that are just my assumptions, have not seen any information on either of them, but they would make sense

Dynamic shadows and render textures are Pro-only in the current version of Unity and there have been no announcements about this changing for Unity 3.0. Please don’t make any assumptions about current Pro-only features suddenly being made free.

Unity 3.0 will have new cool stuff for both Pro and the free version though.

I know. Edited above posting before you posted to make clear that this are assumptions of me only (mainly because they make technical sense as the idea of Unity 3, the new 2010 baby, is likely to not leave the free users any further with old school non-shadow only rendering and without any movie playback support. Render texture is naturally again discussable as it allows replication of whats present for Pro), nothing that was mentioned so far in any way.

Is $1500 too much for a top-notch engine, for you, sparky?

I’d prefer to have Occlusion culling than shiny eye candy

I agree. Unity Pro already has good rendering capabilities. Occlusion culling will let you render a lot more on a broader range of hardware than the fancy new render features. Which will most likely not work well on anything less than a 7800GT type card.
