Okay, I just wanted to let the community know how Unity fan boyish I’ve just recently become.
It’s easy to use. Nothing seems to be too inconvenient to the point that I get frustrated. It’s all there and it’s all user friendly.
It wasn’t built for any one specific game genre which is a really good thing. Makes it generic and easier to make any type of game including 2D.
The graphical output is really pretty. The water looks beautiful. And 4 is going to look even better.
Unity uses C# which is my language of choice. An extreme plus.
The community is vast and helpful.
Unity is incredible. Just saying.
P.S. I had a nerdgasm when I saw the video on Mecanim. haha
haha Yeah, I started with Unity. But I never fully appreciated it until just recently when I was at a 48 hour game creation competition. I looked at all the other game engines being used. XNA, Game Maker and what not. I opened Unity and was like “Unity is awesome.” haha
By the way, khanstruct. I bookmarked your Starfall stuff. I’m going to check that out later for sure. =D
I come from the software industry (but also used Torque and other engines in the past), I know what you mean. xD
The most important fact about Unity, is that they focus more on improving workflow, pipeline and platform support…
Instead of putting everything on graphical eye candy features, they add gameplay core needed features (eg Mecanim).
I mean, animations and characters interaction is what drives today’s 3D games. Problem solved.
And I’m pretty sure they already have some nasty plans to attack other weak areas of today’s game development root problems!
Unity is in a good position right now and will continue to add aggressively new impressive (and needed) features!
I work as a professional .NET developer by day and build games at night
I have been using, Torque Game Builder, XNA and other stuff in the past and have just recently (like a week ago) started up on Unity3d - and MAN it’s awesome! Why didn’t I go here before - damm!
I have watch the entire “2DShooter” tutorials from 3dbuzz, and even though it’s old it so great to get started.
So I’m playing around with “2Dshooter” these days: GitHub - Laumania/2DShooter: My version of the 2D shooter game made with Unity3D
My language is C#, so Unity3d fits in here perfectly for me.
All I need now is Windows Phone support, let’s hope it will come sometime next year for Windows Phone 8.
No seriously… welcome to the Unity Fanboi club, and I’m glad to hear you use C#
I was in your situation a while back. Been so much happier since I became a full time game dev. For me software/website dev was just waaaaaaay too repetitive. Write to a db, edit, delete… rinse repeat. It was usually that in some form of another.
Each new game I work on is always a new challenge, a totally new mindset, and I absolutely love it.
Just because I’m stubborn, I’m choosing to remain with unity script. So there. And if people push me enough, I’ll start making successful games in Boo instead.
lol I had the same response. For one, the amount of examples and tutorials in addition to documentation is a huge time saver in addition to the editor.
Once you have a fair understanding you can pump out prototypes in hours, and figure out what’s going to be worthwhile through play testing, without having committed too much time/resources to the ideas that don’t work out. And you can roll your code into other games so it’s not really wasted. I’m using code from my everlasting rpg in a short term pony game for kids lol made a prototype of the game in 14 hours and it runs great on my kindle fire.
The wiki has a huge amount of awesome code. Really a time saver as well.
I agree that Unity is definitely one of the best dev tools on the block in terms of community, references, power, flexibility, system requirements, and royalties.
That’s not to say that it couldn’t stand to improve some things. Personally I’d love to see some better middleware and 2d dev tools with HTML 5 and Java support. I hate to say, but their tree generator is something left to be desired and needs work. Also, I think that an integrated brush tool similar to Hammer or World Craft would be nice. And a river/road builder would be nice. Finally I would love to see more pre-made objects that are generally universal.
Oh, and:
Ha! Even Microsoft’s devs prefer Unity. That is too funny.
unity is really awesome as it is, but with a lot of assets from the asset store, like uScript, ngui, 2dtoolkit ragespline… unity becomes super uber awesome (level 99 unity fanboy since 2009 as you can see) hahahahaha
Unity is my fav. Ive gone through hundreds of simpler easy to use game designing software, but unity is alot better, more enjoyable, and feels good to use and create on.
He is not a Microsoft-Dev ^^. He is a NET developer, not part of the NET development team…
River/Road-Builder are in the asset store, that’s what it is for. Unity has nothing to do with roads and rivers and the terrain tools is already an abomination, just to feed the community needs, but without any love. Either you do it right, like CryEngine’s terrain system, or you don’t do it at all. What can we do with such a tool like the Unity terrain? It’s just a toy.
We are definitely working on it! We’ve got plans lined up. I’m quite excited about it. The team and I will soon be trying to collaborate with novice C# programmers. We’ll see how it goes!
