What are your favorite game company names?

Hey!

I’m looking into rebranding my publisher page and I was looking for a new name instead of just ‘Alexander Ameye’ and I thought, why not ask the Unity community about what they like in a game company name? So I have a couple of questions!

  • What are your favorite game company names? (for example Naughty Dog, Fullbright, …)
  • Do you think a ‘silly’ name gives the impression of the studio being less ‘professional’? (without knowing any more information about the studio, what I mean by a silly name is for example ‘Naughty dog’, or ‘Owlchemy labs’
  • Do you prefer names that clearly have some video game terms in them like ‘Activision’ or ‘UbiSoft’ (action/vision and software), or do you prefer a more abstract name like ‘Quantic Dream’

Would be awesome if you could answer some!

I personally love the name NetherRealms. and there Scorpion logo is cool.
IMO Vigil Gamss had the coolest silhouette character logo.

I choose Good ol’ Boy Games for my game development identity. There is a story behind it and it has meaning to me, but beyond that I think it has character/identity, and I think thats important.

  1. I always liked Blizzard. Sounds cool. Back before they became evil, I used to like the name EA games. (This may have been more liking the brand then liking the name.)

  2. Game dev studios aren’t supposed to be professional. Do you think Smith, Smith and Son even knows what fun is? Let alone how to build a fun game.

  3. From a practical standpoint, more abstract names are easier to trade mark. Just keep in short and pronounceable.

I’m not a fan of them, but I have to admit that “Electronic Arts” is a really good name.

Chucklefish Games. Their logo is adorable!

True!

That’s funny haha, I like their logo!

That’s weird, I don’t like it at all! By the way, how did that fundraiser go from a few months back?

Thanks for the input!

WOW, that logofrom NetherRealms is stunning!

That’s definitely a new favorite of mine!

I also like ‘the young hourses’.

Thank you for the input guys!

Youngun. When I was a boy, they were the paragon of virtue that every game developer wanted to be. They took care of their players. And seeing their mark on a game was a guarantee of high quality.

Times have certainly changed since then.

For sure.

Their Genesis titles were all solid.

I just can’t get around how heartless and by-the-numbers the company has become.

Chucklefish is the name i like.

Favourite game companies… In no particular order.

Playdead (inside and limbo) probably some of the most enjoyable games I’ve played to date
Rockstar games (Max Payne etc)
Killday Monday (Fran Bow point and click adventure)
Valve (half life 2)

Treyarch. I really want to know the inspirational story about that name. What is a Treyarch??

It comes from the French words ‘très’ (three) ‘arche’ (arc). You can see where it comes from in their logo:

Not that inspirational I suppose haha, but still, where do the arches stand for?

I’ve noticed that companies in Europe seem to enjoy having a name that describes their logo.

Whereas many companies in the United States have more abstract company names and logos.

On related note I think Psygnosis had a cool logo.

I played those. EA logo at this time was cube + circle + triangle (forgot in which order).

those guys :

Were responsible for Sega Genesis version of Toy story game, though. Also for original “Barbarian” game. I suppose that’s why I remember their logo.

I always thought the name Digital Illusions is brilliant, though lots of their logos are not

I don’t know why, but I was always fascinated by the Ocean Software logo on Amiga.
