In the near future, I’ll need to start building some kind of passive income. I’d like to make some 3d asset packages for the Unity store and other places, but to be honest I really have no idea what kind of games are popular right now. Not necessarily to be played, but to be made.
I assume sexy cartoon females busting out of their clothes is always a good choice, and that realistic FPS weapons probably isn’t a smart place to try to break into.
Is there any niche type of assets people here have looked for but found wanting? I’m more inclined to enjoy making something interesting rather than generic.
Sex has been selling since things began being sold. That’s never going to change.
What I want to know is not what is doing well, but what is lacking. That’s a little harder to research with search bar dropdowns, so I thought a forum thread might provide some useful insights.
That’s correct yeah but only a fool ignores which way the wind is currently blowing. Right now, business is booming not around semi naked women. That still means you can go sexy. Valkyrie from Thor springs to mind. Don’t need semi naked.
This is all a matter of degree. She’s still sexy. So half of her boobs aren’t out in the traditional fashion, or her stomach, but she is still wearing form fitting armor. You can still see from a mile away that she is a woman with a fine figure.
I think what we have here is a case of people not knowing what they want, or wanting to pretend like they aren’t the dumb animals we all really are.
I know which way the wind is blowing, and as usual its not the way everybody says it is.
The side debate was just that. I was halfway joking about the boobies, but it was more like a snide remark about 50% of society and our timeless love for them.
My hope that some people will chime in and say things like, “I’ve been looking for such and such type of assets, but there is a lack.” That sort of thing.
Basically, my perspective on video game culture/society is pretty narrow – I don’t really have a clue what exist out there besides the big AAA stuff and only the most popular indie titles.
My theory is that rampant hedonism is more effective at balancing out unwanted desires than prohibition. So maybe we are in agreement? I don’t know, I think your joke went over my head.
If you’re planning to sell assets you should probably do some research on your own and figure out what demographics you should target, what they’re interested in and what the competition is.
What kind of games are most popular for wanna-be developers? If the initial posts of people who have just joined these forums are any indication it is “games that are completely unrealistic for them to develop”.
Right. So cinematic quality ogres and fantasy hero’s for massive MMORPGs. And I won’t both keeping the polycount below 1 million, because what’s it matter? They won’t know the difference.
If I had to hazard a guess, I would say ‘mostly done’ environments. As good as the state of procedural tools are, they take quite a bit of learning to create customized results, and obviously don’t tackle such things as houses, palaces and dungeons. And it’s really the first thing people think of when they open the editor with a new idea, I think.
If I was to do 3D assets for the store, I would do scifi environments, of which I think there are not too many good ones. But for a passive income, I think you would be best off focusing on games.
Honestly, I think it’s not a practical approach if your goal is a passive income. First, the asset store is packed with models, some really pretty good ones. To do well, your assets will need to be really top notch AND broadly appealing. Like a fantasy world set or something, and there are tons of those and really high quality. If you try to tapped an underserved area, it will probably be too niche to generate more than a couple of sales. Second, if you are targeting the noob/hobbyist market, they are looking for free or super cheap.
If your main goal was a revenue, I would make a few complete game kits that are ready to publish with minor skin changes, and sell for $50-100. Flippers will eat it up.
