What would you ready to buy?

Heya all,

I thaught it could be nice for artists to know what you’ld be ready to buy, or what you would like to find on the asset store. So if you are looking for some stuff you can’t find actualy, post your message there, so maybe an artist can realize your wish !

Well I dunno if it’s a great idea, just let me know if it’s stupid :p.

Anyway, this is a way I think you must post :

1 : Describe the item type you want, or character type.
2 : Describe the platform you want use for.
3 : Describe quality you want for this model (poor, average, good, very good)
4 : Describe type of design you want (realist, cartoon, etc…)
5 : Give the price you are ready to pay for this.
6 : When you found what you want, come back to your post and delete it ^^

Hope buyers and sellers will be able to get good profits from this post

1 : Describe the item type you want, or character type.
A base naked male and female. Rigged. Seriously, finding a basemesh for a human is very hard these days.
2 : Describe the platform you want use for.
PC. I need it in fairly good quality with enough polies to make out the face. But two versions 1 for pc and one for phones would be nice
3 : Describe quality you want for this model (poor, average, good, very good)
As good as possible. It’s a basemesh after all.
4 : Describe type of design you want (realist, cartoon, etc…)
Realistic, cartoon styles are specific to each artist and might cause problems integrating.
5 : Give the price you are ready to pay for this.
25-50$
6 : When you found what you want, come back to your post and delete it ^^
If I dont forget

Just scripts and useful things like that. Stock art assets are somewhat a joke IMO. You end up with the same things appearing in lots of places, and tbh, anyone who takes the look of their game seriously should never use them cause unless you stick to just one type from one author and populate everything with just their work for that specific thing, you’re going to end up with all styles thrown together and it looks bad.

Case in point - Anything using Poser figures is up there with DeviantArt tracers as piss poor talentless wastes of internet.

As I say, the only useful art related assets would be the bigger packs (until they become overused), but unfortunately any artist doing those would have to put a great deal of time into them, time = cost, and they’d have to price themselves out of the very market they were aiming for, just to make it worth their time. I’d rather see a game with custom artwork, even if it’s not very good, it’ll fit better than whatever they managed to cobble together on the cheap from the store or Turbosquid or whatever. And it would be on the cheap, cause if they had the money to spend more, they’d do it custom and get it right. Catch 22.

A script or shader however, is a script or shader, so long as it does it’s job, it could be used in a thousand games and nobody would notice, except the author, who will have made a nice profit for his work, and unlike Art, you can’t really get away with half arsed scripts, they either will or wont work. Plus people who write scripts don’t seem to get much love around these parts and a lot of folk tend to demand scripts from them as if it doesn’t take any effort to make one. A game can exist with crap graphics and good scripts, but it’s doomed no matter how pretty it is if nothing works right in the coding department.

Anyway, the asset store needs some serious kind of content quality management. It’s like eBay only drunk.

P.S. I’m an artist, I just appreciate the hard work of the coders. It’s like writing a movie, you could write the best movie in the world, but people are only going to remember your leading actor.

P.P.S I’m sure someone will flame me.

@ 2dfxman1 If I have some time to spend, i’ll do some, but i’m kinda busy^^

@ Frank Oz I see waht you mean, but I think you’re kinda wrong. People can find quality models for their games, and many people don’t have enouth money to pay conceptors for their first games. This is a way for people to be able to create their firsts games at low cost and with good content quality. Then, graphics designs are realy differents, but some design match goods so it’s a work to find matching models but this is the thing you must do if you have not loads of money for your games.

great thread @ draad! May I take advantage of this? X)

Ofc ! Feel free, I made it for all, not only for me

Hi Frank,

I think that’s a little harsh for a couple of reasons:

  1. Generally I disagree with the “it must be custom art” approach. Yes custom is great, but as you say, expensive. Games need a lot of art, and most indies don’t have the time or budget to custom develop all that
  2. A lot of custom work is wasted… you can tweak a texture of a box 6 ways quickly and no one playing an FPS will ever care (heck, I play WoW, which has re-use everywhere, do I care where it came from … no (they could have spent 5 mins making it look a little different
  3. I like your analogy about the lead actor… like retexturing a model, consumers do like consistency (which is supposely why movie studios pay the big bucks to “big names”) Now in an actor’s case, it comes down to talent and script, how well can the actor make people believe he/she is who they are playing, and is the script believeable enough to immerse the viewer. With 3D models, well… slip on a new texture, hire the right voice actor, and then the coders get to prove that character is who we say he is in the current game

Cheers,

Galen

I was asking to myself, what is sold most, environement or characters assets…

Even though I’m pretty good at making object,s, I’m pretty bad at character art… that being said, I don’t know how useful characters in the store would be as each game has its own story and character.

I also agree that scripts and things would be very useful because as I said… I’m an artist (designer), not a coder (developer). If I can find a script that tells the objects what to do and how to be have so I won’t have to, then it’s well worth the purchase.
