Which license to purchase?

I can at the moment afford to purchase either Andriod or Iphone license (basic one).
I am really new to game developing, so if anyone could guide me in which one would be better to purchase for someone who is starting up.
Thank you

if you have a mac and an iphone or ipod or ipad and you want to make money from your games then go with the iOS.

I dont have a mac and Andriod device but i have both iphone and Ipod.

ios: you need a mac (afaik) to be able to get your title on the appstore, also appstore license cost 99USD annual (Apple invoices that).
Android: you don’t need a mac to be able to get your title on the appstore, but android market costs 25USD annual (Google invoices that).

both platforms are equally populair (well allmost)… so for income sake, it shouldn’t make much difference (even if fanboys claim otherwise).

Thank you saymoo, I think i will go with an andriod for now than

it’s wise to test your application, before putting it up for sale… with either platform…
(no must, but it might help to track down bugs in your application on a real end user platform)

I’m not sure what fanboys are saying, but people are making way more money on the Iphone than on Android.

You are probably going to need to sell your phone or iPod and get an Android. You would do well to test your game.

How much would a mac cost that can run unity and other required softwares?

Around $500. Here’s a good place to get cheap macs: www.cowboom.com

It’s from bestbuy (returns, etc), so you can be pretty sure you’re not getting scammed.

As you can see in the graph, andoid is gaining more and more commercial exposure, also don’t forget that Android is relatively new compared to iphone.

I have to say am pretty confused now. What would be best for me to buy? i mean for someone starting out new and with a low budget :frowning:
do i need some other external softwares or licenses beside unity basic and yearly license which saymoo says is around 25 dollars for an android?
It seems like the most affordable way to start up, please guide me!
Thank you

No one is disagreeing. It is important, and will become more important. But doesn’t change the facts that right now, iphone market is way more lucrative. One thing people forget about Android, is that not all devices can run unity games. Many of the android devices are really deficient, and run really old versions of Android too. Still, i think you will see this get less and less.

It seems like you alone know your circumstances. If you cannot afford a mac to target the iPhone, then it seems like Android is your only choice. Like I said, the iPhone market is much more lucrative, but that doesn’t mean Android is dead, of course not. Just not going to make you as much money. You need to determine which market to target, and what you can afford to purchase to target it.

The android developer fee is a one time $25 dollars I believe, not anuual.
I have 4 games (exactly the same) on both platforms. On Iphone, I’ve earned about $500 and on android about $25. So 20 to 1.
I have seen other people post similar results: revenue from android is about 5% and 95% from ios.

Belal, right now profits in either platform is likely going to be low for you. Unless you are either a prodigy or insanely lucky (maybe I should use “AND” instead of “or”) you won’t make much money of your first games.

If it’s outside of your budget, stick to windows development for now. Do some games and try to get them into indie web stores, there are a few listed in a thread somewhere in here…

If you ask about what market has the most potential to make you money, that’s the iOS market hands down. iOS controls over 85% of the mobile profits. No fanboyism at all (and btw, bring up the word “fanboy” to any discussion, is an acknowledgement you have no valid points against the upcoming arguments.)

There is certainly some money to be made in the Android market, but its very unlikely you will make much, and almost always the case you would had earned way more for the same work on the iOS platform (as we stand today.)

But given how it all is a huge gamble, I would say stick to windows. IF you feel the need to buy into new hardware to pursue anything, then I’d say go get a mac mini. It may open the doors for you to publish for both, iOS and Mac. This will result in you potentially having 3 income paths (on top of windows) instead of spending money on an Android device (without contract we are talking about the price of the Mac Mini) and be stuck only with 2 paths.

But again, I reiterate: stay developing for Windows first. Make some fun games and try to sell them via indie channels. Go mobile once you make at least 500 bucks.

Thats actually a bit bigger split than the link I posted (that proposes iOS controlling between 85% to 90% of the revenue) however not that far off.

Thank you for your suggestions, i think i will do exactly what Tharsman suggested, thanks again mate your a great help!

Here is a question that maybe I missed. What is your experience with Unity? Released any other games?

I only bring this up cause if you haven’t done much with it, I would almost suggest saving your money and make some smaller games before investing in trying to make sales. Just my 2 cents.

In a nutshell, this.
