The latest blog post seems to indicate that Unity is upgrading the plus plan. Dark skin, higher revenue limits, optional splash screen. This change actually means I’m likely to go with a plus license.
There are also some discounts for perpetual license holders moving to the new subscription model.
But enough talk about the pricing model. What I want to know is why we haven’t started three thousand threads about it like we do every other time Unity changes its pricing model?
I’m getting plus. I miss my old black skin. Not having a splash screen is absolutely worth it for 35/mo.
I felt bad about paying $900 to get rid of the splash screen for a year. $420 is still a bit excessive, but I feel like this is worth it. Unity deserves the money for making a good system, and this feels like a fair price to be a customer in good standing.
I can’t see any reason to get Plus. Personal has everything I need. I can load resources, Display 2D or 3D graphics, play music and sounds. Don’t need any more than that except for content. On the bright side Unity will continue to receive money from me in their share of the sales of assets I purchase on the store.
OK, this is a proper deal. Thanks for sharing @Kiwasi
With the optional splash screen and upped rev limit (and let’s not forget the dark skin) I feel like this is a really attractive offer for a lot of people. Hopefully enough devs will support this to make it worth their while.
But but but but but ZOMG DARK THEME AND SPLASH! lol.
I’ve only had pro simply for the fact to have them two things. I had a free 3 months of pro for finishing my 1 year subscription. But I may in fact get plus to continue for the dark and splash. Not for any particular reasoning aside from just wanting a nice editor that helps me concentrate better without bright colors.
Granted I hated paying 75 a month for that. (Well that’s a lie, originally I had gotten pro right at the end of 4.x cycle) so I had gotten it for the other legit reasons. I could have opted out of it when 5 came out, but I consider stuff like that like giving my word I’d pay for something. So I just got used to the darkness and splashlessness LOL.
Seriously… what the fuck, people. This is orgasmic shit here… even my broke ass can almost afford $35 a month!
You already know the answer. Same reason your favorite restaurant has only negative Yelp reviews. People just like to bitch. Happy people, satisfied people, have better things to do than complain. I can’t believe this, honestly. Makes me think maybe they do care about us. wipes a tear
I actually felt that the previous pricing model Unity released was fair. It always sucks when the price of something increases but at least they moved all platforms “under one roof” so that phone developers do not arbitrarily pay more than developers for PC, Xbox, Wii, PlayStation, Samsung TV, WebGL, etc.
The new pricing model seems… kind of generous. Unity Plus is now usable for small studious and it seems like there is a more natural progression; you start with free, when you are getting ready to release you get plus and once it really kicks off and you are making $200,000 a year, you get Unity Pro for developing your next game. If you are unable to get to the point of releasing your first game, you haven’t paid Unity anything. If your game doesn’t become a huge hit, you can stay with Unity Plus.
This new Plus plan works for me, as a desktop only dev. I’m very happy with it.
I guess as in many game/dev forums, the most noise is made by Mr Angry from Coventry. Very few happiness posts.
There aren’t a thousand threads because some eedjit is posting with a thousand usernames on the blog posts about not getting dark skin for free. He’s spent, and will resume posting inane threads when he recovers.
I’m actually more excited to see that the free edition will allow some customizing of the splashscreen with a blurred background and your company logo. Also it’ll say “made with unity” instead of rubbing in that it’s the free version. Great choices, props to them!
