Asset store: Misleading review deletes and reposts to get rid of downvotes

Hi,

I’m the author of the following asset: Unity Asset Store - The Best Assets for Game Making
The original review of e_matvi got downvoted a lot, but e_matvi DELETED his reply (and thus deleted my reply and his downvotes as well) and REPOSTED his review without downvotes and without my reply.
Is it possible to report such reviews?
The review of e_matvi is very misleading and is spreading misinformation without even contacting me first for support.

Yes, click the flag button.

Thank you! Love you!

Great work !

We too had a similar issue with our Pro Radar Builder , where a users purchased and uses the 2D system as a 3D system and instead of contacting us directly, he goes on the asset page and leaves a rating and a completely false and misleading review.

We also Flagged and reported this , however to this day , nothing has been don to remove this false information.

The customer didn’t even bother to contact us afterwards , I figure he realised how to use it and forgot about it.

Do you know how long from the point of flagging to it takes to have a concern reviewed ?

I have no idea.

If you are in the Asset Publishers Group you can create a post about it for more visibility, they generally take valid reports seriously and deal with them, apologizing if they’re lost in the system.

Yeah, the review system is pretty broken, as you would expect. I sell nothing on the store, but buy a lot and read a lot. The amount of just ´bad´ reviews is amazingly high. People don´t read the descriptions of the items, expect it to do something it wasn´t meant to do, then leave a 1 star rating with a bad review. I pity the guys who sell GUI skins, because almost all of them have 1 star ratings with negative reviews because ´no scripts included, doesn´t work´… The other funny one is people who include a demo scene and thus usually some standard assets, then people give a 1 star rating because they imported those assets and overwrote their custom stuff, which were named the same as the standard assets… and then rant about it ruining their project which they didn´t back up…

I agree! But that wasn’t my problem (if you were responding to me that is).
The fact that you can delete your review and repost to get rid of downvotes shouldn’t be allowed in my opinion. That is just bullying the publisher.

Again, I agree. Again, that’s not what I said. Where did I say people can’t change their minds?

Reposting the exact same review to get rid of downvotes is clearly different from changing your mind.
There are many ways to solve this problem. One of them is already implemented: flagging the review. I didn’t see the flag, that is why I posted here. If the reporting is taken serious this should be no problem.

A simple fix. Do not allow anybody to delete there original reviews. Instead allow them to reply to the review with an updated rating. Seems like an easy fix - although I’m not a web guy.

Not to be contrary here - however I don’t see that review being false or misleading? He seems to be using the asset incorrectly but what he writes isn’t misleading or false, and the reply confirms his points and clarifies he is using it wrong. The project is wrapped in a dll (nothing wrong with that because it is true) and there is another package that does include source.
Regarding the support email and contact link - they DO go to facebook pages which require the user to ‘find’ the contact information - rather than providing a email address directly. That also is not false or misleading.

I think your response clears up the problem the user was having - which I think shows really good support from you.

And - I wonder why publishers get bent on 3 start reviews.
In my view 3 stars = good, 4 = great, 5 = best, 2 = not good, 1= bad.
Seems he gave a good review on the pack, even though he was using the pack incorrectly.

For these reasons - this is probably why Unity has not removed that review.

Hi Folks,
We do take a look at all flagged reviews but in an effort to keep the ecosystem honest and real, we generally do not meddle with deleting reviews unless they are inappropriate or truly not relevant to the product.

If a user is spamming or repeatedly reposting a review to get around our helpful/not helpful system, feel free to include that information in your report and we will investigate accordingly.

Cheers,

I agree with the above. I think with any type of user review system, they should err on the side of letting the review stand.

But for me at least, I have learned not to discount an asset just because it has an average rating, because it is soooo easy to see when reading reviews that it was a probably false assumptions on the part of the buyer more so than a problem with the actual product.

No. It was very clear: prevent people from deleting a review and reposting it again. There’s no valid reason for that. Nobody has said or implied anything about not changing reviews; that’s something you came up with for some reason.

–Eric

There’s no contradiction, and I honestly don’t understand why you have such a hard time understanding this simple concept. Deleting and reposting a review. That’s it. Nothing about changing reviews. Do you understand that reposting a review is by definition not changing it? It’s a repost, nothing has changed. Please explain how there can be a valid reason for doing that.

It’s bizarre that you think I’m misunderstanding anything. You change a review by clicking on the “edit” button, not hard to understand that I hope. I’m not sure you realize that editing a review doesn’t delete it…this topic is specifically about reposting a review to get rid of downvotes. I notice you failed to explain how reposting a review can have any merit, so I assume you accept that it does not. As for detection of a reposted review, you could employ heuristics, but that’s probably not worth it since I doubt it happens often. It can be handled by using the flag button and letting a human sort it out, which we’ve already established several days ago. Then you came along with your straw man argument about changing reviews, which nobody was ever against. So, what was the point of all this again?

Edit: I see you’ve been deleting your posts here (irony?), so I guess you realized there wasn’t any point. Enough said.

Just an update on the situation.

The issue got solved, because the review got downvoted again and isn’t visible on the frontpage anymore.

Unity Customer Service contacted me with the message that they won’t do anything about it. She said that they can only do something if there is offensive language. Which is very understandable.

Today, another fishy thing happened. Someone posted a 5-star review to the page. There where no up or downvotes which is pretty usual, but as I refresh the page, all 5-star reviews got 6 (!) downvotes all of a sudden. This is a LOT considering it is a new asset.

This resulted in the new 5-star review (only 20 minutes old) being pushed down and hidden from the front page, because only the 3 most helpful reviews are displayed.

Is someone (the competition?) targeting me or am I being paranoid or is this nothing unusual?

I have seen these issues, as well. I do feel sorry for some of the Asset sellers. Although I am sure there are those who deserve low ratings, I have seen many times where their bad ratings were based on their own code, their lack of reading or understanding the documentation, not seeking help from the author (or giving up too soon) or rating it bad because the latest beta version of Unity created some incompatibilities - or even that the author didn’t customize the asset explicitly for their needs. Often times when the author fixes the issue, responds with a please to assist them, etc. the user who left the review rarely returns to update it or even contact the author.

Here is a new one , A customer is upset that we released a new update .
he somehow thinks that we are depreciating a product. none of it makes sense. so he game us a 3 star review.

the review is here : https://www.assetstore.unity3d.com/en/#!/content/52838

This “review” is unbelievable , complete madness.

I hope that this stands true here.
