Data on Unity version adoption (Unity 6+ vs older)

Hi,

Does anyone know if there’s any data showing how many active projects are on Unity 6+ vs older versions?

Thanks!

Yes. Asset Store Publishers get that info posted quarterly. The great majority of Unity users will update rather quickly contrary to popular belief.

As of December 2025 Unity 6 (including 2023.x though that’s only 1%) amount for nearly 75% of asset installs. The 2022.x versions accounted for 21% of asset installs. The remaining ~5% distribute among older versions with 2021.x accounting for 3.4%. By the end of 2026 you can expect 2022.3 to be in that 5% range or below.

Historically the numbers have been fairly stable so I’ll relay them generally. Within 3 months after the release of a new LTS version, the editor versions to which paid (!) assets get installed into are as follows:

  • > 70% in the latest LTS and its tech stream releases
  • ~ 20% in the previous LTS and its tech stream releases
  • < 5% in the second to last LTS (no longer supported) and its tech stream releases
  • rest is distributed across even older versions

You can assume that the rule for assets is to test for and support only the most current LTS versions and its tech streams (at this point: 6.3 LTS plus 6.2 and 6.1), and the previous LTS version only (6.0 but not the “tech streams” 2023.2 or 2023.1 - those combined are already < 1%).

If it doesn’t cost you more than half an hour a quick verification against the second to last LTS version is not the worst idea but going at lengths (2+ hours) to fix any outstanding issues with that version (currently: 2022.3 LTS) is plain and simple a waste of your time. And so is excessive testing of tech stream releases.

What sells much more effectively than trying to reach out to the (myth btw) “Unity 2019 is the fastest” users is to utilize the latest LTS version’s new and shiny exclusive features - if there are any, and if any of them make sense to utilize in your asset. That’s assuming you do want to publish assets.

Thanks for your information!

You mentioned Asset Store publishers receive this data quarterly, is it sent via email? I’m a publisher but I can’t seem to find anything about it in my inbox.

That makes sense. I recently fixed some troublesome issues in my asset for Unity 6+, and I was thinking whether I should go back and do the same for older versions. But that would take hours of extra work, so I’m leaning toward dropping support for versions below Unity 6.

See, the number of assets i have when installed out the box throw a big pile of errors was always very disappointing for me, especially as unitys return policy is if you downloaded it you used it so now cant return it - well how else did would I find out it doesnt work?

I sometimes feel Im the only 1.. and I do know that should it error and you post as such RIP..

When you signed up as publisher you got an email where it was detailed how to request access to the Publisher forum. Do you still have that sign-up / welcome email? The data is shared in the private Asset Store Publisher forum here on Discussions.

If not, there’s a link to publisher forums at the bottom of this page. I hope it shows the necessary details if you aren’t yet signed up, because for me it just opens a post.

I found the forum, thanks!

Unity’s return policy doesn’t mean anything to the laws of your country. If you have consumer laws that protect you in your country, push against Unity with that and you should get a refund.

@spiney199 id agree, except

As a result, no..

Similarly even when Diablo4 new expansion came out last year, even before they opened doors they refused refunds because well the letters F and U seemed to apply and so even though under EU rules they should have as receipt of item was not yet granted… nope.. we often get screwed

Unity tried to pull that on me as well but I reminded them that multiple companies have been fined in Australia for trying to do that, and I got my refund.

It’s legal within the EU to have a user expressly consent to waivering the 14-day withdrawal period - via said message and checkbox. I believe the user also has to be reminded of that waiver by email (or letter).

Any refunds that do get issued nevertheless happen in good faith, not because they have to and definitely not because “they fear getting sued”.

Note that these waivers exists for non-digital products as well, ie no return of opened underwear.

True but under trade descriptions we are entitle to a working item as described ..
